Could anyone advise me what the symptoms are re dirty egr valve. I have a 1.9jtd, 124,000 klms. When I accelerate away I trail a not so nice plume of black smoke - the turbo stutters a little then picks up and the smoke goes. Also begining to loose power on the hills. Is this an egr problem or turbo failure area or both? Any help / suggestions welcome.

Re: 1.9 multijet 150 egr valve removal / cleaning

Further to the above post, I carried out a limited cleaning of the egr valve, limited because on my 1.9 jtd Stilo, the outlet side of the valve faces down and I found that with my selection of tools I could not release the 2 bolts connecting the outlet pipe to the egr. However, did release the solenoid section of the valve to find that the cavity where the spring loaded plunger is located was full with soot. Cleaned this out and reassembled and gave the car a test drive. For 10 klms car drove well with notably less black smoke (if any) and the peformance seemed beter. However later in the day did a 100 klm drive and almost had to push the car home. Think in my situation, will let my local garage have a look but the above guide is a well presented option for those who can DIY.

My local garage as inspected the egr valve and found nothing in the egr valve other than the usual (?) but they did find a split in one of the pipes. They have ordered the replacement pipe, have to take the car back once the part as arrived. This as to come from a central dispatch depot. Can any one tell me if ordering a replacement Fiat part in England they have to rely on a central despact depot. 6 months ago I replaced a track rod end and the main Fiat agency here in Tarragona (Spain) had to forward order this part from the central depot - 5 day delivery for what I thought would be a standard stock part. The Stilo that I have owned from new (2004) has given me exemplory service with only the T.R.E. and the present problem being the only issue so far, 125,000klms - 6 years service.

In the UK, Fiat have a central spare parts depot in Warrington, Cheshire but dealers also order parts from a depot in Poland. Most times when my local dealer has ordered parts for me from either depot, they've been here within 24 hours.

Can you tell me which pipe they found a split in? I have the same feeling in my car and the EGR is fine.

Full marks to Argonought! Today (24th of Nov.2010) the garage fitted a new intercooler pipe (cost 80 some euros--£67). They had previously cleaned the AGR valve which gave some respite from the black smoke and also found the split in the intercooler pipe. Total all in cost for the work done including VAT was 150 euros--£127. Took the car for a spin down the local autopista --- no smoke, no whistling from the turbo, aceleration spot on and the car considerably quieter. Once again, full marks to Argonought who diagnosed the problem spot on!:)

Glad you got it sorted. (y)
