i feel my fuel consumption of my 1.6 52 plate dinamic is rather high i seem to only get approx 26 mpg ,i have seen this higher but always go back down to the low 26 ,going by the trip computer is this figure still acurate if i have 17 alloys or does it not make a difference,i am low paid and i am always driving around with low fuel light on,please somebody tell me something positive

This sounds similar to what Twincamms is getting in his 1.6. No doubt he will be on later to confirm.

However, other 1.6 owners seem to get a higher mpg.....

Drive it like you stole it, then get a friend to steal it when you can't afford the monthly repayments 'cos you've spent all your pennies on Fuel! :p

You think your economy is bad.... :p Just worked out why my mini gets poor economy. :D Its 'cos it does a good impersonation of a motor from the fast and the furious, shooting foot long flames out the exhaust on the overrun! :D

Thats does sound low for a 1.6; i get around 30mpg (ish); but ive got a 1.8 and dont hang around that much either! I only drive it like i stole it, when some chav in his nova or corsa, etc, etc, wants a race! HEHE! But there has been threads like this before and ive also noticed TC has always sed he gets that type of return in his 1.6 n all! Dont fink there will be anything you can do about it, have u brought the car from new?! If so it might be using abit to run in it and settle down after a few miles! :)

Problem is twinncams burries his head in the sand, he claims that all 1.6's must be like that, and many of the other 1.6 owners say they get better economy.

Take it to the garage.

If they say nothing is wrong, then its all down to your driving style, and the type of journeys your taking.

Given that the combined figure quoted is about 30mpg, mine seems about right. However I will say that I used to be around 26mpg before it had its 36k service at soneacre p'boro.

I just had its 60k and still staying around 30mpg.

I get around 18mpg now, but as i said before i do drive it like it's built for. I have tried driving nice and steady but when i come off a bend onto a duel carriageway im always too tempted to boot it just so i can hear that engine.

Maybe i will try harder and see what i get then.

the book combined figure for the 5 door 1.6 is 38.2mpg.
as the stilo here is used 90% of the time for 14 mile commutes to work then another 14 miles back home its not really getting a chance to do better mpg, its stuck a bit closer to urban figures.
I guess it really is down to the type of driving being done, as with the local driving it was sitting at 32mpg, and when I took the car over to edinburgh and back it jumped upto 36mpg

to be honest, I dont find it that exciting to drive, I tend to cruise at around 85, only floor it if im in a hurry. Maybe if it gave me more of a buzz I'd use more fuel. But I suppose the track is for the thrills and and a car like the stilo is a good cruiser as far as im concerned.

I'll put in my two penneth.........................

Stiloboy, I do not stick my head in the sand, you should take yours out of your bum!

Ok, my 1.6 has always returned between 23 and 28mpg, this was before all the modifications I made to it and it has remained stable even with all the changes. I average 26mpg under normal everyday driving conditions, if I boot it that goes down to 21/23mpg and if I'm Driving Miss Daisy I can actually get it up to about 28mpg!

I questioned the dealership about this when I took it for a service and they told me after they checked it out, that all is in order.

The Brava I owned before had the same engine and returned the same sort of consumption figures, so I am putting it down to this power unit, regardless of what anyone else says. You have to remember that this engine is long in the tooth, it dates back to 1990 when they used to stick them in Tipos, so it's never going to be a cutting edge, high performance, high economy unit, unlike the 1.2, is it???

I hope this answers all your questions and remember, if it's fuel economy you want, you should have purchased a Diesel, or (to keep SB happy) a fantastic six speed 1.2.

Thank you!

Somebody said to me the other day that when they have their air con off they get better fuel economy i dunno whether theyre talking a load of sh*t, but maybe you could try a tank in your car and dont have the air con on and see if it makes any difference? Or you may want to wait a while before you try this because its f*cking freezing

If this does make a difference to your economy then maybe its down to the air con unit? I dont have a clue how they all work, so maybe im completely wrong
