Tuning Eventually decided to try a Tuning Box and I'm impressed.

First - Insurance.
We had no problems at all. Swinton instantly knew what I was talking about and put me into a modified category for £21 extra a month. Well worth the extra BHP and ft lb. (y)

Second - Romania
Haven't got a clue about tuning over there but I can highly recomend this box for diesels. He will post to anywhere and give any help he can.
Keith - http://www.dieselexpress.co.uk

Third - Is this a 'proper' tuning box.(Hitby)
Its "digital", read my previous post for a simplified explaination.
It works and it works very well! :slayer:

Forth - Are there any petrol versions of ECU Chip tuning boxes available anywhere?
Yes, but they do not produce anywhere near as good a result as the diesel versions. A slight increase in fuel presure works realy well on diesels.

Fifth - Economy
Watch this, my missus driving for about half hour on the way home(low fuel). Here's the video results of the tuning box on our Multiwagon at 85Mph(sometimes 90Mph ).

Hi Shadeyman, where abouts do you plug it in when fitting? Can you describe it?

Thanks,

Its not complicated but it is awkward to get to if your like me and have a large pair of mits(hands).

1. Unplug the connector on the end of the common rail.
2. There's 2 connectors on the tuning box, 1 female, 1 male.
3. Plug the male into the common rail.
4. Plug the original connector from the cars wiring into the female connector.

Thats it.
Cable tie it all into place. I used a sweat band to hold the actual unit in place because cushions it from the vibrations of the car and allows me to remove it easily to change the units settings.

Turn the ignition on, wait 60 seconds for eveything to reset, then start as normal.

Full fitting instructions are supplied with the unit.
Make sure the ignition if off and the key out when changing the units settings.

EDIT
If you plan to buy one make sure you mention the fiat forum. Would be good to see this guy sign up here for a trading account.

Have a look at this site -> http://tuning-diesels.com/Synergy1/tu3all.htm

I have used the Synergy 1 for about four years and having nothing but praise for it.

To answer your question - I believe it's anything up to 30bhp as well as improved torque. It's the cheapest increase in power that I have ever purchased in my 70 years and what is even better is that it is transferable between common rail diesels.

I'd be shocked if it was the same gains as a remap. And i still think a remap is the way forward to this sort of thing. Does "you get what you pay for" not apply to this as well?
I can't really see how it can be as sophisticated as remap if it ONLY controls common rail pressure.

I also can't follow where fuel economy comes into this either - does it decrease the pressure :chin:

No, there's no need to diconnect it, just make sure the ignition is off and the key is out.

One more stupid question to satiate my impatience :) Do you have to take the engine cover off to fit it or can you get to the plugs from the side? I can't remember how much access there was and I'm at work so I can't go and check :(

Edit: Never mind - I found a picture online, it's got to come off :D

Like I said, if you have large mits like myself then yes, access is a problem.
My missus however has small hands and she manged to get her hand in without removing the cover.

The common rail is below the MAP sensor, thats the one to the right of the dip stick.

The common rail is "tube like" and full of diesel under a lot of presure. There will be 4 or 5 smaller pipes leading off it to the injectors of the engine. On the end of the common rail is the connector your looking for. Someone with a small hand can access it from the right hand side. These pics might help you find what your looking for. (y)

So just how much HP do you actually gain after installing?

Couldn't give you an actual messured amount of BHP increase as I've not bothered to test it on a RR, but I can tell you it is a very significant amount that you instantly notice once you find the correct setting for your car.

If your not completely happy with it, dieselexpress.co.uk will give you a full refund and your car will instantly return to its original state as soon as you unplug it. The best £89 I've ever spent!

Hi Shadeyman, as you can see the engine in the guide is different from mine!

I can see the common rail but there is no plug on the right hand end of it. There's no way to see the left hand end. The only plug I can see on it is in the centre

Is that it? Is this the same engine as yours?

No, its not the same engine as my Multiwagon(2005) that has the tuning box on but it is the same as my old Stilo(2002) so yes that is the connector your looking for.
Where did you have you tuning box from?

EDIT
Why did they change the layout of the common rail, what year did that happen? Obviously some where between 2002 and 2005?

Thanks Shadeyman, I got my box from Daron at TMC (site sponsor). He's been really helpful, even rang me while out for pizza with the family (must have an understanding wife!). It's dark now and the wife is away in the car for the weekend after today so I'll have another go at fitting it on Sunday afternoon using that connector. Fingers crossed!
