Hallo,
I have Stilo 1.6 5Doors and i have a problem with the headlights.
When i'm driving out of town in the night and when i turn on the BIG lights, the dipped headlights goes off.
Do you have idea where is the problem?
Thank you

You can't have both lights on in one headlight, except when you turn on the fog lights.

The dipped beam is pointed down and the long beam is pointed up. There is no point in having them both on at the same time, as you need to see further when driving faster.

This is happening on most modern cars.

Huh  I can only assume you don't drive a Stilo then

The WHOLE point of having 4 main lights on the front of a car is to put as much light on the road as possible. On a Stilo that's 4 x 55 = 220 watts of illumination and is the same for many other cars of its class.

What's really stupid is attempting to use fog lamps at the same time as it would be a very strange fog if you're already driving with main beam. That's why the car stops you doing this (dipped with fogs is OK of course)

I thought you could only have main or dipped beams, not both together. Only time you get both together is when using the headlamp flasher.
That'll be cars with H4 lamps I think you'll find Dave.

From what I remember the filament is split 60/55 watt.

So on main beam you only have 120 (2 x 60) compared to 220 (4 x 55) watts on the Stilo

EDIT: OK, so how many have just gone outside to check? I must admit I did as wasn't that certain ;)

I agree with what Davren said. Well I have one, and my father has one as well, and both of them can only have one light on, either dimmed of high. The position lights or the fog lights work independently.

@Argonought: you sure both your dimmed lights stay on when you turn on the high beam?

The fog lights are the ones you operate from the button on the console, the dimmed lights, high lights and position lights are all operated by the stick that also contains the signal lights. I'm sure you already know this.

EDIT: I just came back from the parking lot:p So did you check and both of them stay on? :)

Well, Argonought was right. :) When you turn on the high beam, both dimmed and high stay on.

So the man really has a problem. I must say that I was very very sure it was doing the same in mine. 99%. So mine may have had the same problem but is fixed now. All I've done is replace a lightbulb at the dealers and haven't checked since.

Cheers.

You had me wondering there for minute if you might have special car lighting laws in Romania that restrict light output or something :)

Mind you, taking the opposite tack, I did very nearly get arrested in Croatia driving in bright sunlight with my lights OFF

The police women that stopped me (I didn't have my driving licence with me which is yet another offence :() looked quite nice but not that much into S&M so managed to talk myself out of being taken back to the cells

I was actually amazed you don't have to carry any papers around, when I was in London. :) The same situation is in Romania, as in Croatia, so bring your papers with you if you plan to visit. :yum:

So what could it be? Could the fact that the bulbs are not branded by FIAT? Do they have anything special in comparison with any other brand that may fit?

Since I bought the car, only 1 bulb gave away, and it was always to right dimmed. Never had an original bulb fitted until 1 month ago, and remember having the stated problem before.

All H7 bulbs are the same - either they light or they don't (some are perhaps a little brighter such +30% +50% +80% etc.)

I'll stick my neck out and say I've already given the answer in post #3 :chin:
