Question steam from oil dip stick, missing oil?

Checked my oil today and it was about half, took a trip to halfords to buy 5L of 0w-40 mobil....20% off atm

when i got to halfords, it was pretty low...and there was steam (i think) coming from the dip stick hole, and oil filler...it wasnt gushing out, just whisping when i opened it...coolant isnt low, took about 1.5L of oil...just want to know whats happening? if its anything to worry about?

not worried about the oil consumption, its the only top up ive had to do in about 4 months, and its driven allot, over 12k done in about a year...

Difficult to tell without seeing it, but hot oil can give off a vapour that could look like steam so probably nothing to worry about. If there was water in the sump, you'd see other evidence of it.

You shpuld always wait a few minutes before checking the level. Give the oil the time to return to the sump after running.
When you checked the level before it was halfway (0.5 L) and after you drove to Halfords it needed 1.5 Litre?
You might have overfilled!

Re: steam from oil dip stick, missing oil?

There is pressure down there. The tube going from the engine into the inlet control valve releases the pressure. If this one is clogged, pressure will rise up the dipstick, but I don't think that's your problem - but worth ruling out.

On an earlier car I had there was a brass filter in this tube with really big oily deposits that required cleaning. Eventually I cut it off and put a little KN filter there. So the hot fumes never reached the throttle body.

That K&N filter sounds interesting Morty. I know the brass fiter you mean, but later cars don't seem to be fitted with one. Is the K&N a substitute? Any details?

I just measured the inside of the rubber hose / tube. Inserted a brass pipe with the correct diameter, letteing an inch stick out and bought a little KN filter to fit the outside of the pipe. Crank case venting is the name.

Here's a link.

i got to halfords, went in bought the oil, came out opened bonnet checked and filled...i think the 5-6 mins would be enough for oil to return to sump? i usually wait 1min for it all to "settle" ill go have a check in a min now that its cold and been left overnight...IF ive overfilled can i just extract it from dip stick hole?

Flip the car over and let it pour out the filler hole.

Re: steam from oil dip stick, missing oil?

oil will be chucked around the engine,5 minutes is not enough to bring all the oil to the sump,I always leave the checking till the morning, you may have overfilled the engine, check in the morning do not start the car again leave for a couple of hours or morning, sure its about 4.7litres but depends on the engine size, never heard of the tool to extract from the dipstick hole, sound like a good idea, you may have a problem though the stilo hardly uses any oil,no leaks is there? or bigger problem on the way!

My 1.8 has steam coming out of the dipstick
hole in similar circumstances, it is an hot
running engine and you can suffer burns
just wiping the dipstick when the engines
hot.
