Hi, this is my first post,

basically im getting my student loan in sep and have really set my eyes on a stilo 1.8 or 1.6. But after talkin to my m8 at work who has a punto he told me not to get 1 as they are always breaking and its the same with the stilo. I really want 1 but dnt wana fork out cash for 2 many repairs. So do you lot have many problems or is his just a shed?

Cheers

Theyre not THAT bad. Some are blo*dy awful, others are brilliant. Much of this depends on how careful you are when you buy one.

I'd avoid the 1.6 engine. They can have problems with the gearbox, where (without being technical) they basically explode. That can be expensive. They also like going through ignition coils, though this is pretty cheap and easy to put right.

The 1.8 is a better bet. Only noisy variators spring to mind as being a problem on this one. Theyre harder to find though (as they sold less than the 1.6) and will be abit more expensive to insure, tax, fuel etc.

The 1.9 JTD is probably the best bet, as the engines don't have any specific problems so it's just the usual Stilo warning messages, often caused by a worn out battery, plus suspension knocks and rattles.

Regardless which model you buy, problems can usually be avoided by picking a well looked after one or two owner car. No point buying something thats been waxed and valleted within an inch of its life when underneath it's been owned by 4 or 5 different people. Usually if it's had a lot of owners it's because it's caused them alot of grief. Always walk away!

oh ok, well ive been looking at the jtd aswell cuz of the 52 mpg! and yh they are supposed to be for that sorta stuff but im going to uni locally so i can stay at home and keep my part time job so i can afford all those things with that.

I think im jst guna buy 1 anyway, roll on the 13th sep!!

I have got the 1.6 stilo had it for a month or so, so far its great no problems 34k miles on 53 plate only £2500, I was looking at getting a JTD but id want the best jtd which I probily couldnt afford insureance on it so I never and most low BHP diesel are **** so get a good one.

Not wanting to sound too old, but really, if you can manage to, take the cash, stick it in an ISA, use only what you absolutely need to use. Then when you leave university, you won't spend 20 years paying back the money. I left university in 2000, it took 8 years to pay back the money, that was when you only borrowed up to £1600 a year! At the current £3500 a year, you'll be in debt forever!

I repeat, only use what you need, save the rest.

PS. If you can want to blow the lot, get into accomodation at your university. When I went through, the people who stayed at home with mummy and daddy where generally the sad lonely billys who had no friends due to a lack of shared experiences. Again, that was some years back!

£3500? My student loan last year was £5100, this year it's around £5800.

What from student loans company?

Mines been about £6600 + tution fee's for 2 years.

Yeah. That figure doesn't include tution fees but I don't have to repay that. Tution doesn't have to be repaid in Scotland, as long as you're progressing through the course (if we have to resit a year, then we have to pay). I'm not sure if England works like that?

Nope :(

Lucky Scotish so and so's

My son graduated with a £22k debt, and now hes working there is monthly interest going on that. He spent the first big payment he got on a 46 inch plasma screen - had me to take care of him....

I'm about £11k in debt so far and still have another 3 years to go lol. I've been quite fortunate in living rent free, so with minimal outgoings, half of my loan is put into my savings account. I try not think about how much debt I'll have once I graduate, scary thought being 20k+ in debt for a piece of paper saying you're qualified in a particular field.

I'll refer you to post #3 in HERE - Very good overview of the JTD (By JTD_LIAM)

 I dont quite know what to say about that. You are mostly correct but partly wrong.
Have you seen the interest on a ISA . You will owe more interest on the loan the day you have to start paying it back than you will ever make on an ISA.
My advice is only borrow what you essentially need.

I stayed at home, i still had a laugh and kept in touch with my friends at home. I did miss out on a bit of the uni experience.

Ok back onto cars. Dont listen to your friend, fiats are no less reliable than any other car out there.
Stick to the 1.8 or 150bhp JTD.

I disagree. Due to the base rate, there is no interest on the student loans at the moment. So you'll profit by putting the loan in to a savings account, until the base rate changes. I recently got a statement from the student loan company and hadn't been charged interest since the base rate hit 0.5%. :D

Yes but what happens when they put the base rate up to 12% in 2-3 years time like in the 80's.
You wont make any reasonable profit in an ISA for the very same reason because both the money you have and owe is governed by the same parameters.
You will just run a risk of not having the money when its time to give it back, like the OP intends, buying a car or Mortgage once out of uni and then having to pay massive interest.
IMO there is no free money. Go to work and earn it. If you borrow it somebody will get more than that value back.

Apologies to the poor op. He only asked what a Stilo is like

Cool have a search of the forum at the what to look out for threads and clue yourself up.
I would also recomend that you get an AA check. I don't know a lot about cars and I bought my last one privately from a long way from me. Having had the inspection done before I went to look at the car, I would always have it done on any car I buy.

One last piece of advice is that this is a forum. People come here with problems not to say that their car is going swimmingly. Don't be put off if you do see a lot of moaning threads. :)
