Technical ASR Failure Loose Connection [ECU defective?]

We have tried resetting using dealer level tools

The tools we have used are, Dec Superscan II, Reflex 3130, X431, AD300 European software, ACR 400, AD100 (key programmer)

What fault codes did you get?

A fault code is likely to tell which two CAN nodes the the communications fault is between.

Sorry did not make a note of the codes as displayed thought that by clearing them the fault may clear. What a rookie mistake. We now have the vehicle stripped out and in bits, cant see any obvieuos damage to the wiring. We have also changed ecu, bsi, key and ariel from another vehicle with the results still the same. Message on dash display reads. Loose connection?. We are going to try to get a loan of a runnning vehicle and swap all components again, just in case. This is my first stilo problem so I wont give up, BUT in future I may think twice before taking another one on.

Fault codes just tell you there's a fault. Clearing the codes doesn't fix the fault. For Stilo engine management fault codes (PXXXX), once the fault has been fixed, the code will clear itself after 3 clear engine starts. Not sure if it's the same for CAN communication fault codes (UXXXX)

Bear in mind that Loose Connection could also mean Lost Connection.

Well, as they say The Plot Thickens.

We solved our isuue with the Stilo non start, :) Turns out that when the job was towed in the original engine ECU had been removed by a third party and refitted 180 degrees out. :bang: As this was our first problem of this type every ECU we fitted afterwards was fitted in the same orientation. We never checked as the connections all slotted in place easily. I allways assumed that these were security slotted to prevent missallignment. Not in this particular case it would seem. Even more interesting is the fact that the dash display lights all appeared to be working correctley. The fact we had removed the whole loom from its holding points and opened it up to check each wire individually made us remove the ecu for ease of access, at this point we noted the ease with which the plugs fitted incorrectley. Two minutes of trial and error and we had a runner. Has anyone seen this before as we will remeber this for a long time. I have posted this to enlighten, and also amuse, those in the know, and like ourselves puzzled proffesionals, but also to point out that. If a customer does not give all the pertinent facts when bringing a vehicle to you for repair, his own lack of honesty will end up costing him in the end, wait till he gets his labour bill.

HTH

well... another one with the dreaded fault!!!

ASR Failure / Security . Loose connection, My little stilo is as good as dead in the water.

Was fine until 2 weeks ago but now sick to death of it and cant afford to throw anymore ££££ at it.

Only happens when starting , doesnt matter if hot or cold. can sometimes start straight away but more often then not comes up with the above fault.

So far ive had the ECU sent off , inspected tested , immobiliser removed, so the ecu is ok, (12 months warranty as well! Auto-flash)
Crankshaft sensor replaced with new one. ,
Immobiliser aerial ring connection checked - all connections seem fine (though shouldnt matter now immobiliser disabled)
Battery replaced, D4 connector checked / cleaned - no corrosion, all earths seem ok but have been cleaned to make sure , also all battery connections, ecu connections etc and still cannot get the damn thing to work, Even checked the brake pedal switch, no problems there either yet still coming up with the ASR Failure / Security... . Loose connection,

When i did get it running no recorded fault codes though??!
Though never happens when driving along like many others reported??

any ideas anyone?? as otherwise this is one little stilo going to scrap heap as cannot afford to do anymore to it! and cannot afford for another week of not getting to work! :bang:

Gladly!!! i love the little thing,, and is a great little car but need to get a diesel anyway as this little baby costing a wee bit too much on 60-70 mile round trip each day,, hasn't missed a beat since i had it until this!

Hi, I have the same thing on mine, saying loose connection, abs light on handbrake light on and speedo not working. This has only happened since ive had a new gearbox put in, any suggestions on this please...I have read all through this, any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.

Check earthing points, especially the engine earth strap which is connected to the gearbox in some cases (y)

Hi most easterly pandas, thanks for that reply and I will check that out. Couple of questions for you...have you had this problem and if so how did you cure it? If I check all wires that have been removed to get to gearbox and if I put them all back will I still need to clear the faults from ecu? Thanks.

Hi, I haven't had this problem, a friend did but just sold her Stilo (I told her not to get it in the first place as I'd seen tell tail signs when we viewed it). Warnings should reset automatically after 3 clear car runs if you cure the issue (y)

I finally gave up on my Stilo 1.6 16v. After having soldered the ECU several times and having it moved outside of the engine, the cut outs went from once every 5 minutes to 3 times a day. The only solution to get rid of the cut outs, "engine failure", "ASR Failure" and "loose connection" is to replace the ECU with a brand new one. That is too expensive on such an old Fiat model and mine is now in the junkyard. I would not recommend anyone to buy a Fiat Stilo 1.6 16V although everything else but the electrics is nice.
