Rear Tyre Wear

The rear tyres on a Stilo wear very slowly as basically they just follow the front ones. I thought I`d check mine some time ago and on doing so I found the n/s rear 1.5mm down on the outside edge. The tyre had only gone 9500 miles.
I informed my Dealer who carried out a 4 wheel alignment check and they said it needed the rear hubs and bearings replaced on both sides, which they did. They then re-checked the alignment and found it had only moved 0.5 degrees. After contacting FIAT it has been agreed to replace the axle/subframe in order to get the alignment within tolerance. They tell me this should cure it.

The reason I am posting this thread is to bring to members attention that this problem exists. FIAT are well aware of it judging by the official paperwork describing remedial action which I have seen.
Rear tyres do wear a lot slower than front ones and this is partly responsible for the problem not being spotted in time....before the Warranty has expired.

My advice is to check your rear tyres for un-even wear now.

I think your advice is good, I took my car in for geometry check as the front tyres were wearing out and it was found to have the o/s rear axle was bent. No visible signsof damage according to garage so fiat replaced axle under warranty. Checked with the garage a few days later and they told me the car went back to them 3 times with different axles until they found a straight one. Could be a production problem somewhere [:(!]

wear on passenger side rear tyre

Can anyone let me know if this prob shows the possiblity of axel defects discussed on numerous threads , The outside of the rear passenger tyre is badly worn probaly now illegal.

What info shoul I go to armed to my dealer with.

Stilo Abarth march 2003 - bought august 2004

I have had two new rear axles fitted to my 1.6 Stilo. The first axle was changed because of the well documented knocking noise, unfortunately the replacement axle was of the batch that wore out the edge of the rear tyres. This was replaced with an axle that was supposed to be fault free and I got new rear tyres at the same time, all FOC. Although annoying it was dealt with OK really.

However, I have had to change the rear tyres after 11000 miles which is not OK. I also had the front tyre inside edge wear problem and had new tyres fitted, again FOC which lasted 20000 miles. I have mentioned this to my dealer who said the rear wear was down to my driving style. It's not; I'm no longer a boy racer and my argument is that as the car is front wheel drive the front tyres should wear out quicker that the rear and excessive wear caused by my driving style would also be reflected in wear of the front tyres. In fairness they have said they will look in to the matter.

Before I go back it would help if anyone can throw light on the problem, perhaps with experience of something similar.

Thanks

Chris

I thought the new rear axles were supposed to fix this fault??

Apologies for stating the obvious but (on the big assumption) that the new rear axles has fixed it could it be something simple like your tracking is out? If your tacking is all OK I'm lost on how to permanently fix this design issue.

20,000 out of a front set of tyres is pretty good - my Abarth is down to 3mm on the front after just 9000, so would be illegal by 12,000. Back set have 6mm on them, so ought to last in excess of 30,000. Those tyres are the Firestone Firehawks fitted in the factory, which I'm told will wear pretty quick as they're a soft compund.

Theres no way the back set on a Stilo should wear faster than the front set - unless you' re doing hand brake turns all the time :)

Hi

Thanks for your replies, I don't think the wear to the rear tyres is a tracking problem; the tyres have worn out rasonably evenly across the tread although the N.S. front and rear have worn more than the O.S.

The tyres were not the same make all round, the front were Dunlop Sport 200E as fitted originally, the rears were Goodyear NTC3 which was an obsolete tyre but I can't complain as they were free. I asked the tyre place if the Goodyear were a good wearing tyre and they said they were.

Handbrake turns are not me, a boring old fart with the speed warning set at 75 mph so I don't get caught again is a better description.

Re: wear on passenger side rear tyre

go to your fiat dealer and ask for a 4-wheel alignment check,if your rear wheels do not come into the required tolerances then new modified stub axles are available to right this ,which should solve the rear tyre wear.ok gl.
