Hey guys, good forum , have read lots of useful stuff , didnt want the first post to be a cry for help but i'm tearing my hair out.

The mrs' jtd dynamic is having problems.
Cant get main beam , in auto or manually set , no blue icon and no fmh lights.
The relay is clicking on t1 and have 2 lives on t2, if you go to main all lights go off , all dash lights go out as well when lights are switched on but stay on in auto

I have cleaned the d4 connector and dried the fuse box on the battery which was damp .

Any help would be appreciated

cheers pete

Ok don't panic, work through it logically:)
None of the wiring goes through D4
main beam relay 2.JPG
relay T2 will have two lives all the time the ign is on so it's good that you have checked that already but what T2 relay is probably not getting is an earth signal from the body computer M1 pin 9 telling it to "switch on"
main beam relay 1.JPG
So it might be main/dip switch, earth C15 or wiring in between

main beam switch 1.JPG
If your dipped lights are working ok then earth C15 would appear ok
I'd try to see if this line (red circle) is going to earth like it should when selected which it probably isn't and then find out why (AL= light blue and dark blue) on connector B pin 2
Most likely a switch problem

Does your headlight flash also not work?

No no flash either , and if she runs the lights in auto the boot opens .
was looking to find the fuse box and replace it but theres dozens of them.
really appreciate the help as its coming towards the mot .

There should only be 3 fuse boxes. B1 in Deckchair5's diagram is the engine compartment fuse box near the battery. B2 it the fuse box behind the dashboard panel by the driver's (for RHD car) knee.

Third fuse box is behind the left hand panel in the rear of the car, but there's nothing in there related to headlamps.

Dave.

Taken the shroud off and sprayed contct cleaner into the switch , now i have the blue light on and the lights wont go out or go onto main , switch access is fun eh.

Is the red circle on the wiring for the switch under the cowl , i assume to remove the switch i need to remove the wheel.

man beam headlamp circuit B1 1.6.JPG
Access to the column switch connectors is difficult so | would check for earth happening when main beam is selected at the under bonnet fuse box B1 here connector A pin 12, again wire should be AL =blue/light blue. If you're getting an earth there when main beam is selected then it may be a relay or bad contact problem in the B1 panel

For the switch I would gain access to the wiring with everything is situ and test the circuit functions by back probing or by stabbing the wires to gain electrical contact whilst it's all still in place. The column switch assembly is expensive, £200 or more. and you're dealing with airbag and a very delicate clockspring in there which has to be locked in place (see red locking pin above) before removing the column switch so read up before you attempt any removing of items in there or leave it to professionals to do

whole switch assy underneath 2a.JPG
This is looking at the column switch from underneath of course but there are two 6 pin connectors there. C5 should be a black wire going to earth. B2 is the feed (blue and light blue wire) from the switch to the body computer and this should go to earth when main beam is selected either by flash or permanent. So simply gain access to the wire by piercing through the outer insulation and check whether it is going to earth when selected

The main beam switch contacts very often simply tarnish with lack of use so work it a bit and keep fingers crossed

Sometimes the column shroud prevents full forward movement of the switch (it's been known) but if the flashers don't work either then it won't be that which is why I asked

TBH I'd take the stalk's unit appart. Its not that difficult if you sit at a table and do it carefully. Done it myself without any issues, and enables you to get right to the issue.

When apart you'll see just how simple it is in its workings, and maybe able to fix it easily.

Work case sinario, there is a new stalks and clockspring unit for sale currently in the classifieds ;)

  • Thanks

Yes it's not too bad to dismantle one but need to find out first if the switch is putting out the earth signal or not. It might simply be a bad contact or bad T2 relay in the relay panel B1 which is prone to dampness/corrosion. Serious waste of time otherwise

Exellent , thanks for the help , have a good idea where i'm going with it now thanks.

Sit rep..
no sidelights on sidelight setting
no sidelights or dash lights on dip
no mains or flash or fmh or blue icon
on the auto setting it unlocks the boot
the red fault light is on , no dtc showing , can erase light but it comes back immediately

the lights will switch on and of now and the blue icon has gone , probably over did it with the spray

Okay sorry for the delay , did the above and its not the switch , when we put a feed to the blue/blue wire on the brown multiplug the mains came on but still no sidelights , is it likely to be the b2 board .

It was running fine for most of fri morning , then just wouldnt start and showed the warning fuel cutoff and ebd failure , of course when i got there it started and is running now

cheers guys , pete

You'll need to be more precise as there are a few blue/light blue wires there. You'll want to put an earth on those and not a 12v feed, I presume that's what you did. If you did put an earth on those and the main beam worked then it still points to the switch and/or earth for the switch as you have bypassed the switch and it worked

Sidelights are on a separate circuit

Have you checked your C15 earth?

No , where is that , can get it on a ramp monday , if the sidelights are on a seperate circuit , would that point to the b2 box , we did what you wrote but were not that sure we knew what we were trying to achieve , .

it was in the brown plug and was the same colour combo as at the switch , the flash was working as well , not brill with electrics as you can tell, the multi plugs are black and brown , which is the A plug .

See the red circle. The switch H5 connects the wire with the red circle to earth to turn on the main beams. So if you connect the wire with the red circle to earth and the main beam then works with power on then you have proven everything downstream from there works as it should and the problem will be with the switch or where the switch gets its earth and that is earth point C15

engine bay.JPG
Next check is does earth point C15 connect to earth properly with near zero resistance with all power off? This is located near the bonnet riser stay so you won't need a ramp:)
Best check is a voltage drop test there. With power on then there should be near as dammit 0v between the earth wire there and the car bodywork

http://www.aa1car.com/library/voltage_drop_testing.htm
Read this and become an auto electrician overnight:)

If C15 is proven good and earthing the red circle wire turns main beam on then you know the problem is with the switch

I think i follow that where or what does the switch look like , the diagram and the actual engine bay lie , lots , is the c15 earth physically in the engine bay ?
what about the sidelights , is that the same earth , it seems that its something controlling the 2 , maybe the auto electrician is a better bet , mechanics are simple compared to the black arts of electrics

The switch H5 is your lights/ headlight/ indicator stalk switch

Sidelights wiring is a totally different circuit. They only use very little power so there is no need of any relays and the only earths are at the headlight clusters themselves

Do you not have an elearn CD or something similar? If not then get hold of one as you're sure to need it either now or in the future

Auto electrician might be your quickest bet as they really wouldn't take long to diagnose your problem but it's quite a complicated circuit as you have auto lights too

IF the lights flashed when we put a live to it , would that confirm the switch earth , elearn cd search coming up i think .

Dont understand how the sidelights could be out as well then

Don't put a live 12v to it, put an earth to it

But yes, if you put an earth there and the main beam works then it means the switch ISN'T putting an earth to it. Then you need to find out why?:)

A bad contact fault in the switch could turn the sidelights out when you select headlights. Electricity will always find the easy way out, it won't do work unless it has to, a bit like me

Ok seems i have no idea what i'm doing , looking for an elearn cd download site thats gonna help, we checked the earth at the switch and that seemed fine and i know the bulbs or both ok and the sidelights came on with the headlights , so they work , may just bite the bullet and order a new b2 board , everything seems to go through that
