driving in a really heavy storm some building rubble washes into the road and i lost control. Fortunately the rubble slowed me down so I didn't hit the wall too hard. The car is a write off! Combination of all the undercarriage damage, expensive spare parts and me pushing for a write off cause I doubt they will ever get the car right.

it looks nasty, but was it very damaging??

the shell looks intact, and even the alloys still look clean, cant you rebuild it???

and with engine damage, clear candidate for an engine swap :D

A wing, a door and a bumper and a clean underneath! You got it written off for that! Wot a scrote! Yep your insurance will be affected, you might if your not lucky end up loosing money, 'cos you'll get what the insurance firm decide is the market value, which based on Fiat depreciation might be less than you owe in outstanding finance!

Hope it works out well for you! But all i can say is you must have been driving too fast for the road conditions!

The A-post is badly damaged and the Stilo is a monoside constructions AFAIK, which basically means the entire side of the car is a single pressing. The door and outer wing are the only side panels that are seperate. Thats not a repair I would fancy on my car!!

OUCH! Not a very nice Christmas present... The storms up in Johannesburg claims another vehicle.
Sorry to hear about your loss... good excuse to swap for an Abarh though :p

By the way, how did you find the service levels from Fiat in Gauteng? I haven't had any problems from them down here in Cape Town (touch wood).

He lives in South Africa so i think insurance wont ever be a problem out there! Its only because we all live in the UK we have to pay the stupid prices!

Yes and no... we don't have the same problems with insurance you do, but our monthly insurance premiums are still way too high for my liking. My insurance company even had the nerve to force me to install a satelite tracking device in my Abarth. Now I have to pay a monthly fee to the tracking company on top of my "normal" insurance premium.

Terrible. Took me 1 month to get a set of windscreen wipers for the car which were defective from new and the dealer wouldn't accept it as a warranty claim. (small potato's i know but its the principle). Then I took it in when it had about 6000km on it because occasionally the engine would start jerking like it was being starved of fuel. Couldn't find anything wrong with it and charged me R145 to reset some timing. (again small potato's but its the principle). It still did the jerking thing after it was "serviced".

I also had absolutely no confidence that they would be able to successfully repair the car if it developed one of the many gremlins mentioned on this forum because the technicians seem to know f/a about these cars and received very little training.

And then there's the resale. I went to go have a look at an abarth and they offered me R108 000 on a trade in. Car had 10 000km on the clock. AND that was because black was such a desirable colour.

So i've since bought a VW

I must agree that if you are thinking about resale value, th VW is the better option in SA. I made peace with the fact that I won't get much for the car when I try and sell it one day...

Speaking of Fiat's technical know-how... the only Fiat mechanic I know of that knows anything about the Abarth in the Cape province is in Paarl (about 60Km from where I live), so I will have to take my car there for a service...

The upside (or downside) of the Abarth is that nobody in a 500Km radius from me has the same car (according to the dealers I have spoken to).

I always enjoyed the exclusivity of the stilo but its a double edged sword. People don't carry spares for them and I couldn't find a panel beater in town who's even seen one before. Another stilo rant is spares prices. On the quote from the panel beater R3500 was the price for one 15" wheel.Excluding tyres. Thats just madness cause a wheel can easily get buckled and need replacing! I don't have the quote with me but if you consider how few body panels I actually damaged and that no airbags were detonated you can just imagine the price of all the parts! considering the car was a write off.
