no reverse lights for ages then start to work at -5 degrees today alas only once, bulbs are fine presume it's the reverse light switch, any ideas where it's located please

Remove nearside front wheel and look up and right you will see a wire coming from side of gearbox thats your switch if memory serves me it needs a 19mm ring spaner

i just had EXCATLY the same thing happen on my 1.9jtd mw. i reversed it up to my garage and just put the car ignition on without starting, i then played with the gears going though all of them rapidly - all of a sudden the reverse lights came on, and touch wood they have now stayed working. i think my switch had become sticky as the car hadnt been used since oct - nov.

I agree with Roy (y) , have had the same a few times on my 2004 jtd mw. Each time a half doz or so sequences of forward to reverse gear has cleared it.

Seems switch contacts are prone to tarnishing.

Greetings!

I have a Fiat Stilo Multiwagon JTD 2003 left hand drive.
I've found a very good picture of where the switch is in a Spanish forum.

Procedure:
Remove the driver side front wheel (left).
Look up behind the shock absorber and under the battery. A torch light might be useful.
You will see the cable (white and brown wires).
In the picture it is the one in the green square.

Open the clip of the plug with the help of a screw driver. Put the cable out of the way.
Then remove the switch with a 19mm ring wrench rotating it counter clockwise.
It must rotate more or less easily.
Insert the new one from ebay (3x cheaper than in Fiat).

Assemble all back and the reverse light will work again.

The old switch didn't have any damage so it must be an internal thing. Odometer is 177000km.

I've used an empty volley ball to lay down my head while I was looking up.
The position is quite tiring to the neck.

My regards

Sad to say you are about 4 years too late! But I'm sure it will be of help to some one in the future!

Hi, i have the same problem with my reverse light switch. It's filling with oil and I have to blow it with compressor to get it working.

My reverse lights have not worked since I bought the car so decided to check the switch. Removed easily but when I press the plunger by hand the revrse lights come on, yet when in the box it does not work. Also there is a GM stamp moulded into it - not FIAT...... Any thoughts????/

Greetings!

Mine said for Opel also and works good.
Don't know if your problem is the switch or something else.

Cheers

I think you will find that the problem lies in the fact that the end of the R.switch has worn as has, probably, the actuating lever on the reverse selector so that they do not fully move the switch in order to close the contact although when checked by hand it works. A new R.switch will rectify this.

I had the same problem. WD40 didn't help nor blowing with compressed air. It worked for 2-3 reversals and then failed. had to buy a new one. The original was around 20Euros but I manage to find an GM adequate for 5euros.

I have the same problem, looks like the thread is a few years old but did you solve the issue?

I can’t see the picture in post 8, is anyone able to repost a picture of where I can find the reverse light switch. Thanks in advance
