Hi,

My Stilo (1.6l engine) is showing engine fault message when I'm start it on cold mornings (-18 C). If I drive a bit and turn engine off/on three times, the warnlight goes off and doesnt appear again, until next time I start an engine on cold morning. Could it be normal under cold conditions, or should I get my error codes read?

I also noticed that engine temperature is dropping quite a bit when i press gas hardly and after releasing the gas, temperature rises again. Is this normal?

hey mino, -18c, no wonder its flashing up fault messages, its a wonder it starts! where do you live, would you not be better using a snow moblie. lol.
if the fault light is going off its not that bad. this might sound stupid but have you got lots of anti freeze in it? you would probley be better putting almost 100% antifreeze in it.
the temp gauge moving up & down when you press the gas on & off is the heating up of the engine & cooling down staight away because of such minus temp, especially if your doing speed. if you have the heaters on (which im sure you will) that will take heat out of the engine. if it does keep flashing messages you could get the codes read, that will help you understand why. another possibilty is the thermostat on its way out but because of the temperture you would need a garage to look at it. another thing springs to mind, do you have the correct engine oil in it to cope with the temp?

Yeah I might need to add some antifreeze liquid, todays temperature was -21C, but i used engine preheater so I didn't have any problems. I think I will get the error codes read today, add some antifreeze and see after that how it's working.

-21 c , why are yous leaving the house to go to the car, im struggling to contemplate those temps!
it was -3.5 c here this morning & i could swear i seen a polar bear with a jacket on!!! :)

-20 is little bit nasty temperature, because you have to wear hat on that temperature .

Error code was P1684 (Throttle posit. learning). Car fixer reset error codes and cleaned sensor, hopefully it works now.

hopefully cleaning the sensor does the trick, maybe its just playing up. good luck. (y)

This is fairly normal unless you have been on a long run. The thermostat thinks the engine should be cooled because it has been revved, but when you are talking -20 deg, I dont think the thermo can react that quickly to water of that temperature entering the water jacket. Hence the temp fluctuations.
