This is an idea i've been wanting to do for a while, change where the hazard light button is into an ipod dock, and move the hazard button mechanism to those buttons where the city and asr buttons are, i have a one black button there so i thought it'd be a good place, just wondering if anyone had any insight on doing this or if anyone has attempted it before, because it would fit my nano in quite snug :p i guess i'd have to feed an ipod wire behind the head unit and secure it in place, but is there any way of attatching an ipod cable or any cable for that matter to my standard head unit... as i'm skint at the moment and can't really afford the head unit i want

Thats an awesome idea, if you managed to somehow get that working, let me know :D

Does anyone have any insight to this?
even just some help about the wiring?

Now not 100% sure, but when hazzards are activated a 'hazzard' light (in the switch in Stilo's) also has to flash along with directional indicators signals on the dash for MOT I think.

So will fail if a propper hazzard light switch isn't used by the City button.

Also that group of blanks are sealed in as far as the wiring. Can't just move top and find the switch under it, so not sure how you plan on doing that side of it, but other than those issues, sounds like a good idea (y)

Ahhh right, hmmrr..
well i will do some more research on this as i really do want to do this, make a nice little feature, i'll let you know how i get on with the progress,

And the blank buttons i will take the whole console out and see what i can see, i did notice today aswell that i have a blank button under the knobs for the aircon etc, there are 3 buttons, ( the one in the middle on some stilos have a snow flake logo on it, but mine is just a blank, i'll just have to take the whole centre piece out where the gea knob and handbrake are and the head unit and all those bits

Yeah, I have a spare button there too (used to be traction control on my 02 JTD, but they no longer fitted it to the 04 versions). I've often thought about getting a spare switch from a scrappy and putting it to practical use - extra front lamps or an ejector seat... :). Or installing a remote 3.5mm auxiliary input socket for the stereo, so that an ipod can be plugged in there.

My G`friends Stilo has a Radio/cassette player (with a tape with a wire on it,so she could play her I-pie thats trapped in it) so she purchased a transmitter for her I-pie, so she can still listen to it though her radio, no mess no rewires both itims fit in the upper glove box & the transmitters only the size of 4 credit cards & cost £6.00 Inc P&P on ebay, sorted. :slayer:

Ps as for the hazard warning switch lighting up, it don`t have to, as my old uno`s switch grubbed up & I rewired it to a switch with no light on it, it passed the mot coz the binnacles indicator light flashes, as long as the tester knows were the switch is.

The 'dock' part is the easy bit by far. Wiring it into the headunit and getting that to work is another challenge. Unfortunately it needs more than just three wires (right ch. / left ch. / Gnd), as you need something that fools the headunit into thinking there is a CD changer present - I dont believe anyone has managed to do this at present.

(Sorry there was, you can bodge an aux into it if you have a CD changer, but the CD actually has to be playing - wouldnt bother)

Easiest way is to buy something like the dension or other ipod adapter that does this for you and mould its dock into your desired position in the car. Budget upto £100 - and you will have control over the ipod with your radio as the ipod then emulated a cd changer.

Yeah at the moment i am using an fm transmitter, but wanted something more secure, and also the ipod dock would make a nice feature, and the headunit i am getting has an ipod cable attached to it so that won't be a problem, the real problem is that i have am pretty skint and can't buy the headunit for a while, i have the standard headunit with the tape player, but was wondering if it is possible to get some sort of wiring for a standard heaunit with an ipod cable, i think it isn't possible, but was just curious, and when i make the ipod dock i'll do a guide, i might relocate the hazard button now, and then do the dock at a later date, it will be done though :D

You can trick the head unit into thinking that there's a cd charger with this. (It's called xcar link - you can google it. I'm not allowed to post a link). You can even use your steering wheel controls for controlling your ipod.

But it's 100euros (in Serbia) and I don't think it woud be an easy job to fit the cable into the hazard light switch (although it would look cool).

ahhh sound, i'll have a look for one, and the hazard light button.. if you pull it out, the wire and the button mechanism isn't under it like i thought, it goes behind it, like, away from you towards the front of the car, so it has a hole in the back, but under the hazard light there is almost already a cut out for an ipod cable end to poke through, all it would need is to make it a little wider, and fill in the back so there is no hole, trust me, where there's a will, there's a way :D i will make this one work (y)

Re: Finally changed hazard light button into ipod dock!!!

Rightttttt, so i finally set off on my mission to actually change the hazard button into a ipod dock, i completed it about a month ago but haven't had chance to post the pictures yet, but here they are

First i started with cutting a whole for the ipod dock

Then i placed the dock in the whole to make sure it would fit then i secured it in with some screws

Then i started filling in the gaps with fiberglass and making the general shape of the dock

Then i started to sand down the fiberglass, then applied a 2nd layer, then more sanding
img9050o.jpg

Then i masked the dock for spraying

Then... I had to find a place for the new hazard light button, so i went and removed that pointless coin holder and set out to work on making that the button holder...

I filled the gaps with fiberglass

Then i cut a hole for the hazard button to fit in

Here are the final results of the dock and the button, i sprayed the dock with matt black paint and wrapped the button holder in carbon fiber wrap...

The dock charges from a cigarette lighter i wired in by the fuses in that little cupboard thing, this one i've made will fit ipods and iphone 3's but not 4's, so i'm gonna make a new one but using the official apple dock with the remote which will fit the 4's, but as i don't actually own an iphone ( the 3g is my partners ) so it doesn't make much difference to me, but i do like the idea of having a remote :p hope you like my work :D

Re: Finally changed hazard light button into ipod dock!!!

looks cool.

bear in mind if you have any sort of video playing on there whilst driving you will find yourself a little lighter in the pocket as its illegal :)

good work though!

Apologies to those who can't see the pictures, I uploaded them to imageshack, I will upload them via the fiat forum after I finish work, I'm on my break at the minute so I'll get straight on the case later :) thanks for the comments so far though :)

I was wondering what you meant by "coinholder", but after I saw the location I realized that my car has the mirror controls in that spot.

Furthermore I am wondering how secure this fitment is in case of a collision. You don't want such items flying around.

But looks really nice though!
