Stilo 1.2 Active 3 Door 2002

The passenger side door is closed and can not open as neither the inside nor outside handles seem to engage the latch any more. The central locking still works and the inside handle still unlocks the door.

I assume a linkage has come undone or broken somewhere, question is what should I do - is it possible to get at the problem without being able to open the door?!

Any help gratefully received as local garage wants 300 quid

Do you have deadlocks?
Have you been using the deadlocks?

If so then it sounds like the deadlock is jammed on that door. Some have found that if you keep trying to release the deadlocks using the key, maybe in the driver's door to save the fob battery, they may just start sliding again.

Then don't use them again is my advice, they jam and they only succeed in keeping the owner embarassingly locked out of their own car. I believe they were phased out on later cars

Thanks

Search on deadlocks suggests this is the problem although solving it if they won't shift looks like bad news - unfortunately it is my stepson so the problem has been there for 2 months so plenty of time for the mechanism to get really gunked up...

Any tips on getting it to shift - might pulling or pushing on the door whilst activating deadlocks help? How about wd40 - given the door is closed where could you squirt some in to get to the mechanism?

Thanks for any suggestions

Still working fine on my 7 year old motor :spin:

I tend only to use them when leaving the car in remote areas though - get a longer walk home if they ever jam ;)

You can't get access without taking the door card off and that's no fun at all with the door jammed shut

Just keep working it to deadlock position and off again and you might get lucky, pushing on the door might help but i can't say for certain as I never use the things

and I think that adds to the problem, infrequent use and always in the worst places when they jam. Although I've never heard of them all jamming at the same time, now that would be hysterical:)

Especially if you were inside at the time...although of course I can't get those 'Dukes of Hazard' images out of my head having suggested that :)

Thanks for the other advice - there are some mentions of disconnecting the battery for 30 mins - anyone had any success with this?

Personally Decks, I don't know where your paranoia comes from :D

Re: 52 1.2 3 door - Door handles don't work, door can't open - SOLVED

OK - here is the wierd bit. Car has been off the road for 6 months as stepson can't afford insurance. Wanting to put it back on the road and needing mot he started to try and fix door yesterday. Got the trim panel off the door (nice job with the door closed - not!) and was removing the door card when we decided to look at how mechanism worked on the driver door to figure out how we were going to proceed once we had the lock in sight. Battery dead so manually pushed the latching bit in the lock until fully locked and deadlocked - then realised that with no battery we could not un-deadlock and open the door. Put on jump leads, played about with unlocking using remote, key and handles and eventually managed to unlock drivers door. At this point tried passenger door and this could suddenly open.

So my theory is that the driver door was failing to deadlock and thus the lock computer did not think the car was deadlocked and so did not try to release the passenger deadlock even though this was on. Thus actually manually triggering the driver deadlock then made it realise that it needed to release the deadlocks and hence the passenger deadlock being released. Does this make sense?!

Pasting this up in case it helps someone else.

What happens is that the deadlock jams half way and Body Computer doesn't know where it is and thinks it's unlocked because "it's not locked"

By manually pushing driver's door deadlock to locked position it thinks "deadlocks are on" so when you select unlock it also moves passenger door deadlock to unlock
