Glove Box Lid - Info & Help With Part Find Please!

Hi -

I had a broken glovebox hinge (as discussed in www.fiatforum.com/stilo/92478-stilo-storage-above-glovebox.html). Decided to fix it, and after a mammoth struggle was finally able to remove the lid/hinge assembly. As described in the earlier thread, it was a nightmare of slow fiddly work with a mirror and torch, and various small torx drivers. I'm happy to post more info about that if anyone's interested, but there's no technical complexity it's just horribly tight and restricted in there.

Anyhow, when I refit I'm going to use nut-headed fixings which will be a lot easier that the rubbish torx screws. Flush fitting does not appear necessary, so will probably weld 10-20mm of hex onto each torx screwhead so it can be located and turned more easily. Will report on the success of that in due course.

Main reason for this particular post is to request help with identifying the new part needed. Old assembly is as photo, and I need to replace it all (some damage during removal...). Please can anyone help with a parts reference (and price would be a bonus) for the complete assembly as in photo? 2004 5 door JTD aircon, vehicle 448121.

Eper diagrams bear no resemblance at all - part 71728346 has no hinge parts, and no panel for fixing to the underside of the dash. Elearn workshop manual only has the removal of the trim panel (procedure 7040A52 UPPER DASHBOARD ODDMENTS COMPARTMENT FLAP COVER - R.R) but at least the parts are correctly drawn.

Hi steve you will find the diagrams are rarely accurate in discription but I can confirm the part no you have is correct. however I think the price will be £50 + and this was off eper 18

Thanks Stores (and YP) for replying - over 90 views and nobody was able to help, I was starting to panic a bit! £50'ish is not unreasonable for the whole assembly, so I'll try to get a dealer to order it in.

Alternatively, I've seen a clever workaround on "the other site" using bottom-mounted steel hinges (see pics) - presumably closes with a magnetic catch at top right corner. It looks really neat, and I'm tempted to fix it for a quid right now.

Hey

I bought my stilo with a broken glove box hinge

I recently bought a new one from fiat for £65 !!

I worn you its difficult to do this.

I managed to remove the old one with a little bit of trouble but not to bad.

Getting the new one in and putting the scews back in was a lot harder!!

My advice would be...

1. buy a decent tork set with heads that rotate
2. remove the left hand air vent to get to some of the screw instead of going in from below.

Thats about all i can help you really with really mate. Good luck

Hope this helps

Fletch

Oh bloody hell, I had enough trouble getting the old one out! Great big clumsy boxer's hands don't help.

I think I'm going for the 99p B&Q hinges - that job above looks perfectly neat and opening downwards will stop everything falling out like it does with the standard hinge.

Will report back (y)

Any news on this? Would be interested to hear as i have the same problem and am quite tempted by the cheap easy fix!

hi all i also bought my stilo with a snapped hinge on it and decided to go have a look at it to day and have now fixed it free of charge it didnt even cost me 99p and its stronger than ever lol.

what i did was take it all out witch was fun....... like going to the dentist is fun!

but putting it back in was as much as the dentist without pain relief:bang:

then i drilled a hole throu the broken hinge arm whilst holding it all in line and then put a long m6 thread screw and there we go! there is no flex in it at all where as the original hinge has flex so im more than happy with it and it does just what it should do and looks right.:slayer:

if anyone wants any more info let me know as i took pictures just incase someone else wanted the free fix method.(y)

Yeah, I went with the bottom-mounted steel hinges - easy job, looks smart and works perfectly OK.

il sort the pics out and a few more details so there is a choice of fixs available for it but just a thought about the air bag thou?

if it was to deploy the passenger air bag how would the top glove box lid react to been alterd to a lower hinge?

id be agaisnt if going with the bottom hinge fix as the air bag deploys a 200mph so a big bit of plastic with screws sticking out the bottom would be flying towards the passengers grill as it would break lose with ease i rekon.

wot u peeps think?

Nice one, any chance of a guide with a few pics?

I had same problem. This is the cooled/heated glovebox right? The Hinge on the right hand side had completly snapped in half. So instead of spending a fortune and hours on end changing the whole hinge i just simply removed the the glove box lining which was held in place by five screws. 2 in the roof of the lining and 3 in the roof of the main glove box. Undo these and carefully take the lining out. Its like a solid shell but could snap if your to violent. Once removed you can see a lot more of how the hinge mechanism works and is a bit easier to get at. Save the fuss though i used the strongest superglue i could find in the shops and stuck the two hinge halfs together. I just remember to be careful when opening it now. The lining simply pops back in place and can be re-scewed in.

D.I.Y ftw lol
