Has anyone else suffered an annoying rattle from the rear parcel shelf of a 5 door Stilo (maybe a 3 door would give the same problem). It seems that the centre part next to the rear window wiper housing drops with time and bumps against the protruding housing when the car is on uneven surfaces. Can't work out how best to cure this problem as the shelf and the housing are a very close fit.

the shelf is pivoted on 2 plastic joints (these should be fixed.. but being plastic they have a tendency to slip out and/or break when the shelf is removed a few times) check these are all the way in and are not broken.. if all's well there - ensure your tailgate trim is firmly fixed (if it's been removed.. it won't be.. and that may cause a rattle not the shelf) all else failing - your shelf might've deformed (easily done if it got wet or you constantly put heavy objects on it).. two options you would have then: a) get it wet and let it dry (and harden) on an even hard surface b) get a new shelf. Or it may be that, as suggested above, your rubber stabilisers have worn down to a point where they no longer work.

Just another thought, the two pivot's (Pointy one's) should have rubber over them. I had a problem were one was lost and it irritated me until I got a new one.

Big lump of Blu-Tac under the shelf against where it rattles..

One other possiblity is that the rear hatch door isn't closing firmly enough against the aperture. It's the door that pushes against the rubber pieces on the shelf already mentioned. The door has two rubber stops that can be adjusted in and out. Might be worth a play...

Just to clarify. The two rubber buffers mentioned are actually on the window frame and when the hatch closes they should push slightly against the edge of the parcel shelf to stop it moving up and down. I agree, if the hatch is not closing tightly enough these rubber buffers may not be touching the shelf as they should.

Parcel shelf on my Stilo developed a rattle - nothing broken, everything nicely secured but still couldn't get rid of the rattle (put it down to the stiffer suspension and the ride height :() - bought a reel of 1mm foam tape from Ebay and stuck it to the inside of the plastic clips the shelf fits into - no more rattle :D

Found the problem. Shelf was sitting too low at hatch end even though it had never carried parcels or got wet. I think the built in bump stops at each end (difficult to see these because the rubber is covered over with wooly fabric) had got compressed, allowing the shelf to drop and bang against the wiper motor housing. Cure was to stick a cistern washer onto each bump stop to raise the shelf to its original height.
