hi there
as you have guessed i am from South Africa. i purchased a 1.9 stilo jtd a couple months back. Had some trouble with it at first, ended up replacing the turbo, maf sensor and altenator, me not being familiar with car and how to diagnose problems made things abit more difficult, have learnt alot after joining Fiat Forum.

Comming to my point i would love to get into contact with stilo owners and fanatics from south africa especially in the johannesburg area. Fiat Dealerships i have spoken to here are just useless and expensive. Fiat parts and repairs here are really expensive and each time i wanna do something new with car i get the same problem, most places i talk to for styling kits or accessories tell me that the stuff has to be imported, which takes time and money.
Was hoping to hook up with stilo drivers in south africa, cos maybe they can advise me were to go to and have generally more experience and advice in finding the best places for spares, repairs or styling kits. any help would be appreciated:worship:

hello john 55, I did respond to STI100's friendship request. Sti100 i live in durban and i have the same problem with fiat in durban. Styling kits cannot be bought anywhere in sa without it being imported. I did find Clifford of suburban motors in durban very helpful and knowledgeable. Contact me on 0315781121 at work before 12pm and maybe we can talk.

There's a guy from Port Elizabeth ... fiat_grande_punto or fiat-grande-punto ... yeh, I know it's not Stilo ... but loads of common parts thro out FIAT range. I've just had Stilo brake pads fitted to my GP!

Stilo From South Africa

Hi guys,

Greetings from south Africa. :slayer:

First off, i own a 2004 1.6 Stilo in Scilla Red.
Simply love the car! (y)
Turns a lot of heads, people always look twice when i roll by.

Anyway, i've got a couple queries:

1) As this car is quite scarce here, i'm having some difficulty getting parts for it.
I'm after a lowering kit, any ideas where i can order it from? i have checked on ebay, but none offer shipping :(

2) Driver's side head light whining all the time, can i just cut power to the motor? and how do i do that?

3) I'm also planning on having it turbo'd, is this advisable? and also would the 1.6 16v motor from a Fiat Palio be plug and play?

Thanks for the great forum, found loads of help thus far. :worship:

Theres no point tryin to turbo the 1.6 stilo unless you have a lot of money even then you could of just got a 150 mjet or abarth a guy called Nikos on here and the greek stilo club has done it tho youll find his posts on here some where. I had the same problem with my lights you can try adjusting it using the controls nxt to the steering wheel on the dash see if that works first?

Re: Stilo From South Africa

Re: Stilo From South Africa

Which part of South Africa you're in? If in Durban, I can give you pointers on who to use. I will not advise that you do the turbo conversion. Had a look at it when I got my Stilo. Cost was not to bad, but was scared with all the changes that needs to be done to make it work. And then it is not guarantee to last for the long run.

Im in Cape town, unfortunately. thanks for the info. what exactly needs to change?

Re: Stilo From South Africa

The local fundi on this type of conversation used a lot of technical terms, but it will not just be a case of bolt on a turbo and all is well.

The electronic management of the engine needs re-mapping, compression ratios needs to be lowered, stronger/better valves and pistons needs to be installed, you will also have to keep in mind that the standard gearbox on the 1.6 was iffie from the start, more power and torque will test it to, and beyond its limits, brakes, however was not a issue (?) beter/upgraded cooling systems needs to be look at.

And so the list goes on. As said bottom line is, yes it can be done!! But how reliable will it be?

I made peace with the slower pace of my 1.6 (compared to my previous car) But then it offers more on ride comfort, styling, value added items etc. In fact I am now driving at a speed and pace that my wife finds VERY comfortable!

Good luck and let us know what you decided to do.

Re: Stilo From South Africa

Thanks for the info man, so i guess the turbo option is a dead end (n)
anyway, do you perhaps know where i can get a lowering kit here in SA?

hello there stilo04
i had the 1.9jtd black was a lovely car while it lasted, quite a head turner because its scarce, i bought it with a blown turbo and faulty maff meter, replaced both of it, lasted me a year until the turbo started giving probs again, i traded it in this year for a polo vivo cos fiat was killin me on repair costs.

its quite a difficult car to find accessories for especially here in south africa, autostyles aint much help. you can purchase a set of generic lowering springs from them or i have heard of some places modifying your existing springs by compressing them or cutting them but i am not sure how the vehicle will handle after that so i didnt wanna take the chance.

what u can purchase frm autostyles is a flat bed bmc perfomance filter which is made for your car, caliper paint to style it up a tad, autostyles do offer a body kit for the car but they have told me they have to import it frm austria and will cost a little more than 10 000 bucks. you can also get night breaker bulbs frm them as well.

the headlights can be manually adjusted i have seen a thread on here some were but i hear u have to becareful as the adjustment components are fragile. i went the route of installing a good sound system. getting a faceplate to install an aftermarket sound system was a mission but i did manage to organise sumtin frm one of the scrap yards.

basically i will agree with the rest when saying not to install a turbo, try the performance filter and change to a perfomance exhaust system, then u go the route of remapping the computer box or chipping it, i was charged around 4 grand to do this.
