Hi

I have a 1.9 JTD that has been an absolute dream for the last 4 years.
I recently took it off the road, and thought I had done enough to keep the battery charged up.
Yesterday went to start it up, with a view to getting it back on the road, and found I had a flat battery, called out the AA, who got the car going with a booster pack, told me to run the car for about 45 mins.. even to take it 'round the block' a couple of time's.
Did all this, turned the engine off and it would not even try to start again.

Called AA back out, (different Patrol), diagnosed battery totally dead and needed new one.. put new one on, car started fine but had a Power Steering fault light come on.

I have been through past threads on this fault and I've checked the fuses, dis-connected the battery again, all to no avail.

anyone got any other idea's of what might be the problem, and how I might fix it.

My nearest Fiat garage is about 15 Miles away, with no tax, MOT or power steering it seems more like 50.

Thanks, in advance, for you help and advice

Kevin

Hi Mate ..(y) yes with low volts the eps wont boot up correctly but now you have a new battery and its been laid up then I would first check the D4 connector and fuses F2/70 amp and F2/10 amp all in engine bay..if they are clean and corrosion free then it might need a recalibration/alignment and thats a dealer examiner job.. I hope its not a gonna cos its an expensive part to go wrong..if it is I have some links for a few sites who can recon it for you..:)

Power steering failure, especially on start-up, is often due to low output from the battery (for which you can include bad earth connections).

If you've only just changed the battery then make sure you haven't fitted a cheap one with low capacity (Ah). Also, as PNL suggests, check for any suspect connections - especially anything disturbed during the battery change.

Cheers for that info guys, I will let you know how I get on

Rgds

One other thing on this..
when I took the car round the block..after it had been started with the booster pack.. the power steering worked fine..

???

cheers

You may also have to drive the car over a specific mileage and achieve full locks as well for it to 'learn' again as it might be looking for a road speed signal in order to complete its learn procedure.

I was thinking that too. Don't Stilos like 3 'clean cycles' before the faults reset themselves & the warning lights go out?

Sorry if I'm being a Numpty but 'Clean cycles' ??
Normally applies to engines faults. Simply means the ECU doesn't see the error condition repeated over 3 runs and therefore turns off the fault display (it will still record it internally though).

Are you getting "power steering fault" just on startup then (just after CHECKS) or all the time

Fixed at last..

thanks for all your assistance guys.. I eventualy managed to get it to
Canterbury Stilo.. who plugged it in and deleted an error code.. steering works fine now, they put it down to possible flat battery...

once again

Thanks very much
