General 4500 rpm - damaging ??

General 4500 rpm - damaging ??

I only use the higher rev bands when they are needed. Day to day driving, the max i use is probably 3.5k revs. My drving style changes depending on who's with me and where too. If its late at night and i'm alone, i like to open the windows and listen to the engine rev! When i'm transporting others though, its all a bit too dignified... Smooth gear changes, no head jerk braking, stereo at moderate levels, etc etc...

Just wondering, does anyone else do the braking thing? Just before the car stops under braking, you ease off the brakes and let the car stop on its on weight. I hate when people brake and brake all the way so the car stops and makes everything jerk!

That's an excellent way to drive (y)

When you think about it, you use fuel to get to a nice speed but when you brake you've effectively used that fuel just to heat your discs up

Laying off the brakes is the easiest way to improve mpg by far (as long as you don't actually run into anything ;))

Naaaaaaaaa wont do much harm, Well if my jtd is anything togo by, Gets thrashed most days. And still hasnt drunk more than a half of a litre of oil in 15,000 miles.

i take mine to 6000rpm a few times aday. most times its 5-5.5k

if im conserving fuel its 2.5k haha.

as long as the engine is looked after you wont have many problems

6000rpm a few times a day? Id say you can look after it as much as you like but that engine is on a short road to death. I certainly wouldnt wanna go anywhere near it if that's how it's driven on a daily basis.

Yeah im pretty easy on the brakes. Don't see the sence in flying up to 60mph if i can see i'm gonna have to slow back down in a few hundred yards. My engine gets its clear out on the Motorway & when joining faster traffic from slip roads etc. I brake lightly to bring my speed down slightly, then use the appropriate gear to bring the speed down some more, and so on. Only had one brake change on my cars in over 115,000 miles aswell, so it must be doing some good.

If it was a diesel I'd be worried, but a petrol engine is built to handle at least 6000 RPM.

I always thought the 4 cylinder fiat petrol engine used in the
stilo were variations derived from the old Fiat Lancia
fire engine in the old 1980's panda's. More electronics
and cams but basically the same. They always went better
when trashed now and again. How ever I drive my 1.8 it's
still pulling 29-30mpg and I don't hang around. If your cambelt
Idlers and water pumps ok a few blips into high revs shouldn't
bother the engine too much. Just make sure you have good
quality oil in the engine and change it more regular than the
recommended service. Poor quality oil left too long between
services will have a greater effect on engine wear and failure.

Thanks for all the info.

Hopefully I'll get my Stilo back today with the new bearing fitted and BAS prob fixed.

I'll be giving it a good thrashing. (y)

Probably I won't. I feel sorry for it when getting up to 5k

Yeah I second that generally when the car has warmed up most gear changes will be 4.5k at the least unless I'm in traffic... driving is boring otherwise :)

a petrol engine, unless its crap is more than capable of hitting 6000rpm with no damage at all. diesel is lower of course but its fine with petrol

If youre going up to 6000rpm a few times a day then you ought to consider buying a quicker car, is my opinion.

And i'm glad i didn't see the insult, coz i was really struggling to be polite in my original post as it was. (n)

Not the best idea to say things like this on a public site

3 figure speeds are quite easily achievable going downhill in pretty much any modern car. My bro got a courtesy car (1.0 corsa) and that was pretty nippy...

Its ill advised to boast about those kind of figures on a public forum.

the stilo 1.6 16v produces the most torque when at 5,500 rpm as i read off a car statistic website thats when i change up. most of the time i rev pretty hard though waving goodbye to saxo boy racers daily :p

Had a blast with a mate down some b-roads at the weekend, first time I've driven RGZ rather enthusiastically and it was a blast. If the revs are kept up, the 1.2 actually hurtles along rather nicely.

Considering it was twisty roads, was quite surprised by how well the Stilo conducted itself. Rather pleased with how the suspension changes have benefitted her :D
