Hi, new to forum, new to Stilos. Just bought an Abarth and getting used to the quirky selespeed box. My question is this: when the thing changes gear in automatic mode (i.e. I've not hit the paddles or gear stick for a change) the car seems to dither around over the change for a second or two. I find it hard to consolidate this behaviour with the flappy paddle manual change, which is quick and smooth. I've not played with the "City" button on the gearbox housing yet so perhaps thats my problem?

I've read that the selespeed is a gearbox with character and personality (putting it mildly) but it would be good to know where the quirks end and the faults begin! :)

Any opinions?

Hello,
I think its one of the 'quirks' of the gear box. When in auto mine can do the same thing. Every now and then when slowing right down at a junction, but not quite stopping it seems to catch the gear box out for a second or two as it decides whether to go from 2nd to 1st, can be a bit disconcerting until you get used to it. I think its do with speed and what gear the car thinks you should be in. It only ever does this when in auto, and even then its not a regular occurance.
Have fun.
Natty.

Yep mine does that as well. Oh well I'll keep using the paddles. Its deffo a fun car! :)

quirk of the system. other members will back this up, but from when i had a selespeed, i seem to recall it being quite a unique system (robotised clutch) than a full auto.

nice and fun, esp paddleshifting.

btw, the city button primarily alters the weight of the steering at slow speeds. i < don't think > it affects gear ratios / timings at all.

I find it changes quicker if you back off the revs as its changing up. But detecting the change in auto is a little more difficult. On my abarththe change dithers about when it cant make its mind up on 1st/2nd when slowing for a junction uphill.

On the 156 Selespeed AUTO is referred to as CITY, so depending on what you read where people may refer to the city button differently.

But to be honest, the last place you would want to use full auto in an Alfa 156 is in a busy city centre.
