re: ASR & ESP warning fault

Any recent work carried out around brakes/wheels?
has the car been sat for a while? could be low voltage in battery that has now had a better charge after the drive?

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

Stilo's are prone to false warning due to low voltage so as Mini has already stated check your battery and if at all suspect replace it..

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

I had a similar problem with the ASR light. Sometimes it, and the ASR switch light, came on every time I drove away and sometimes it would do 30 miles or so before it came on.

Problem was cured with a new brake light switch (common problem). A new switch from Fiat (part no. 46840510) was £8.62. Easy to fit providing you don't have big hands but needs adjusting once fitted.

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

Yep, I'll second the brake light switch.

Happened on my 1.8 just after we got it, and also on the Abarth I brought yesterday! (yes, have a fault on it already!! ha ha!! :D )

My betting is if you just touch the brake pedel even really lightly, the lights will come on!? If they stay on for more than XX minutes (2 I think) then you get the ASR/ESP failure message.

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

It's very easy for the brake light switch to go out of adjustment. For example: if your foot slips off the pedal and if springs back up or if your foot were under the pedal and pulled it up from it's rest position.

You could try adjusting the switch which is above the top of the brake pedal. You'd need a pair of angled long nose pliers. (or strong fingers)

Take off the black plastic sound deadening that cover the pedals (2 plastic clips).
Hold the brake pedal down and pull the switch plunger with the pliers (it's on a ratchet and should click as you pull it) then let the brake pedal back up SLOWLY.

If that doesn't cure the problem, next thing to try is a new switch.

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

Yet again really good info and advice will take advice and try now but thanks everyone for your input.

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

I've just popped out and re-set mine, as it was also messing with the selespeed. Wasn't changing up automatically or allowing the use of cruise control as the brake lights were constantly on.

Took me about 1 minute to remove the switch, pull the plunger down, twist the switch back in place and raise the pedal up.

Works a treat now.

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

Wheel sensor connectors are a common cause of this. open and close each connector a few times to clean it. Also the large connector on the ABS pump can get moisture / corrosion in it causing the same symptoms.

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

Hello....I am a newbie with this ASR/ESP warning light problem. I bought my Stilo 1.9 JTD Dynamic 2 days ago, 44k, one owner & full service history. The seller did point out the warning ASR/ESP and has lived with it since 2004 as his Fiat dealer never fixed the problem. The warning comes on after 4-6 miles of driving. All tyres are of the same size and type.

I understand that this problem could be related to low battery voltage/faulty or poorly adjusted break light switch/dirty connectors(D4?) or dirty wheel sensors/ABS pump connection.

I have already found my brake lights come on with the slightest of pressure applied to the break pedal........so I will try to adjust it tomorrow.

As I have said before I am new to Fiat (previous Peugeot owner) and new to this forum. My question is.... are the wheel sensors easy to spot and are they easy to get to?.......also where is the ABS pump?

Any other advice would be appreciated.....Thanks.

The wheel speed sensors are easy to see if you remove the wheels. There is one bolted to each of the 4 hubs. There will be a wire leading from each one to a black connecting plug.

The ABS modulator (pump) is near the battery and has all the brake pipes connected to it. (No 1 on the attached diagram)

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

Update...adjusted the brake light switch, but I still get the ASR/ESP failure warning after 4-6 miles.

Filled up with diesel this morning and now I get ASR/ESP failure within 5 seconds of the car moving....happened on each journey today....this is the opposite to JIMINSPAIN!

I will look at the wheel speed sensors next. Am I right in thinking there is a 'pull apart connector' connecting the wheel sensor? Is this where I should check for a poor contact?

thanks again.

re: ASR & ESP warning fault

They pull apart but are sometimes quite tight.

Sometimes adjusting the brake light switch isn't enough. It's worth trying a new switch after you've tried cleaning the wheel speed sensor connections.

re: So many problems!!!

can anyone give me a detailed discirption of where the brake light switch is

Hi all, my first ever post...

I get the above warning on the '51' 1.9 JTD Stilo I bought this weekend... the warning displays, I think, if the system were to have to 'take over' when I am going round a roundabout and 'slip' on a wet drain cover (i.e. not when I first start the car). The manual seems to suggest these systems (ASR and ESP) are very sensitive to unexpected resitance on the turning of any wheel (e.g. a poorly inflated tyre).

SO, I am hoping that folks here will agree the following is the most likely - and correctable - cause: When I reverse, the rear right wheel 'moans' suggesting a slightly sticking brake.

Would this be enough to trigger ASR and ESP failed warnings?

Oh, and another quick question... I get rear right fog light bulb blown warning too. I give the exteral bulb casing a tap and the light comes on! I have read a lot on here about bulb warnings... if I pop out the cover on the underside of the boot behind the rear right fog light, is it just those connectors I should clean?

Many thanks all... now to the bodyshop forum to see about the faded red paint! ;-)

For the ABS failure, pull down the plunger in the brake light switch. If that doesnt work, get some electrical contact cleaner and clean the connectors on the wheel sensors and on the ABS unit itself.

Thankee for the post... I Have ASR and ESP failures. BUT, are you saying the sticky back brake is an ABS failure?

No, unrelated. The brake light switch is a small white switch just above the brake pedal. Press the brake pedal down and pull the plunger of the switch down a couple of clicks. Use some fine nosed pliers to grip it if you need to, but I did it just by hand.

Don't forget ABS, ASR & ESP systems are all related in the order given.

Thus is if the system detects a fault within ESP then ABS & ASR should still function but if ABS should fail then you lose everything!

Apart from John's suggestions then make sure all your tyres are the same size.

Cool... as yet, I have not seen ABS failure come up on the system... thanks guys.
