I have a 1.6 Active and it has a problem that when it goes past 3000rpm the car then seems to judder/jolt and has no power.

I had the codes read by the AA and it came up that injector 1 & 3 has open circuit or something so I took it to a garage. They read the same codes, changed the injectors in question done a service and gave the car back - however the problem is still there.

I drove down the motorway the other day, just went over 3000 rpm in 5th and put a bit of power down to overtake when my engine management light come back on, it juddered and all the guages hit the top with the temp going red - then it all went back to normal as I slowed down..

I have no idea what this problem is, and after just visiting Fiat for a quote I ain't prepared to pay £88 for diagnostics then £88.06 per hour after to fix it, not including parts.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thats how mine was and ended up having injectors done on it..its a bloody expensive job to do as well..give me postal details on FS-OC and I will get to new ones over to Tokyo for you..I have to new ones up stairs not used and new..:)

thing is mate, I already changed the two injectors it said was faulty and still the same problem now

Wished it was that simple.. lol thanks anyway buddy.. think I might try the ignition coils then?

Tried ignition coil today, but that just isn't the problem. Each time I removed the wiring from one ignition coil - the engine would change so obviously the coil is working. Anyone got any more ideas?

NO - you've missed the point. :(

These coils can be intermittent and when they fail can cause the most bizarre symptoms. (you've already said the engine is OK under 3000rpm)

As said, try just one at a time and only transfer to next cylinder when you're certain the fault has re-occurred.

No guarantee but still well worth trying (y)

Yeh true, I see what your saying.. Fit one, try at 3000rpm and above.. if not then refit and try again?

Right, got home from work today ready for a long night working on the motor. Took the engine case off unplugged the coil on the right, put my new coil in, plug on and took it up the road to check if it was that coil not working - and it was.. Can't believe it was the first one I took out that was faulty..

Thanks argonought for your help, very much appreciated - just saved me a massive bill.

What are the chances of two of them not working?

After I changed that one yesterday my car is fixed, however now and then I get a slight judder then back to normal. I reckon there might be another one on its way out..

When I had the diagnostics done it was saying injector 1 and 3, if I changed one coil say number 1 and I have a slight problem still you reckon it could be coil 3 too?

If you have the original Sagem coils then anyhing is possible with those..I would pesonally change the damn lot for some decent ones..expensive I know but thats the way forward with the stilo ..you have to stay ahead of the game with the car ..

Yeh well I paid £40 for the new coil, so I might (on next pay day) just get another three to be on the safe side. Thanks buddy

I'd start with coil 3 certainly.

The thing with the coils is that when they start to break down they produce both a sharp voltage spike and most likely also generate an EMF pulse. This then causes electronic systems within the car to produce very strange readings. Combine this with perhaps a bad earth and then you've real problems

That's why the ECU/BC was confused about the injectors.

I think I will replace all coils next pay day so thats one thing out the way.. How common are bad earths and how can this be resolved?
