I think this is now becoming one of the easiest diagnoses to make on the Stilo given the symptoms.

Must be something like 99% (99.9 even) certain to be the correct diagnosis. :slayer:

Took the car to a local fiat specialist as i didn't fancy the local garage doing it as they had not done one on a stilo before and the fiat specialist wanted about the same money. Took it in at 8.45 and it was done by about 12.30, seemed quite quick to me. So picked it up was ticking over a bit rough but seemed ok to drive but as the day has gone on and i have driven it more its really not right. I have a feeling they havent set the timing right.

Called them up and they said bring it down on Monday, i would usually be at work but im on holiday for a few days, nothing has gone right today!

GRRRRR!

ask them to show you the cam tools they used to hold the cam shaft in possition, coz it sounds like they either dont have them or havent used them, hope i'm wrong but it does sound like your timing is out

All depends if its also caused damage or not

not going to drive it any more but will still have to drive it back through there on monday

I would ring them and tell them to tow it in, because if they havent set the tensioners up properly (which sound very possible as the car is getting progresively worse to drive) and the belt slips even more you could risk putting a valve through the piston head, then its goodbye engine
sorry to be a harbinger of doom but its better safe than sorry, and the garage will say you knew there was a problem but still drove it and would use this as a get out clause when you ask them to replace your engine.
hope it gets sorted monday for you then you can enjoy the stilo again

If it's a proper Fiat specialist they should tell you not to drive it and THEY'LL tow it in. But then I wonder how could a proper Fiat specialist make such a basic mistake with fitting a new cambelt. It's not difficult, and if you check your work afterwards, like all good garages should then there's no excuse. Crikey, if it idled rough like you said straight after the job then they shouldn't have handed you the keys but turn it off immediately and take it straight back in for rechecking and sorting

It's a very basic error and it's rubbish garage practise

Good news is the camshaft and crank timing would need to be out a very long way for damage to occur

i did think that it would have to be very out for something bad to happen, I think I will call the Monday morning and tell them i'm not happy to drive it to them the way it is and see what they say. They close half day on a Friday and I just get the feeling that they did it as quick as they could. Its not a big place but they only fix fiats so I thought it would be a better job if I took it to them, seems I was wrong

Could you describe the symptoms please? Mine's running rough too as per other thread, wonder if we can help each other. Any warning lights on? My diesel feels like a petrol with one of the plug leads disconnected, you? Not hijacking thread, thanks.

Poor idoling, lack of power and a miss fire.

Took it in this morning he just called to say he has checked all sorts of things and its fine cant find anything wrong with it. I'm hoping that when I go to pick it up its fine and he has put right what ever was wrong and just not said anything

Make sure you're happy with the idle before you leave the garage.

easier said than done though isnt it. Although im a bstard on the phone at work im not one for confrontation face to face. Then wife drove it home and said it was ok and TBH it wasn't that bad this morning.

He said that he had checked loads of things, the timing the MAF and loads of other sensors and they were all fine.

He did also say that it was always a bit sluggish and to be honest he is right, any ideas what that could be??

Going to have a drive to halfrauds for some trim panel pins to replace the ones i broke on Saturday changing the pollen filter.

Well took it for a blast and it seems fine so either they fixed what was wrong or it "put its self right" but either way it all seems ok now thank god!

Fiat stilo timing belt urgent help please

Hi guys I just took my car to the mechanic to change my timing belt and he gave me a good price £220 fot kit labour and vat. I took the car and as soon as I started driving I noticed that it works on 2 cylinders only with engine cutting off every few minutes took the car back to mechanic and now he is looking into it.What could the prob be as they obviously didnt assemble engine parts properly.Stilo 1.6 dynamic

Needs to be spot on or you'll get lots of issues

Check your plug leads - sounds like they're connected incorrectly.
