Technical 1.9 jtd - egr valve replacement

Diagnostics, parts & labour came to £370 all in.

Don't know if if thats a lot, like I said im just happy to have my car working.

DAMN that is a lot, you coulda got the part yourself on shop4parts for £100ish including VAT then got a garage to fit it for you. Think i might do that

The car was with fiat and I had enough of towing the stupid thing.

After all this was the 3rd garage it had been to.

EGR Valve JTD

Had a recent problem with my 8v JTD lagging at low revs, then pinking followed by a cloud of smoke. EGR sprang to mind, so I removed and cleaned it this morning. Took it for a test run and all was great untill about 15 miles into my drive. When the engine was hot the problem returned with a vengeance. Now runs even worse. When I removed the solenoid, I noticed that movement was very restricted. No matter how much I cleaned (with carb cleaner) WD40'd it and cleaned again, it still felt 'crusty'.

Does the solenoid work on an open/shut basis or is it a gradual thing?

Will I be buying a new EGR valve?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a new EGR is required.... put EGR into the Search tool and see what everyone else has been saying for months now on the subject of EGR's! (y)

Re: EGR Valve JTD

I think the solenoid is controlled by a square wave which means it's either on or off (just the duration is controlled)

It's best to block it as that will prove if it's faulty or not for certain (y)

Well I thought a good clean would solve the problem. The fact that it has highlighted it even more suggests that the EGR is the issue.

Its a shame that you cant just buy the actuator/solenoid as a separate part because the valve is so easy to clean.

Oh well, www.shop4parts.co.uk here I come.

Oh and don't bite your finger nails when you have WD40 under them....not very tasty.

Strikes me it's either the actuator or the valve itself that sticks.

It's easy to see how the valve might stick open but I'm not so sure about the solenoid :chin:

Maybe you could swap parts over and actually prove which part tends to stick by a process of elimination - would be very helpful for anyone else with the same problem.

Re: EGR Valve JTD

The cleaned valve moves freely. There is no resistance, but the actuator is stiff as a board. It feels like its grating. Endless cleaning has not helped.

Its definately the solenoid/actuator thats sticking. As I said the valve is spot on.

I dont want to get a part from a scrappy, just in case it has the same problem.
