Hi all,

Engine fault light came on last night, No loss of power or hesitation nothing, just the bleep bleep and the light is still on today.

Anything i need to prod or poke before i speak to the dealer.

It did get a huge thrashing yesterday morning but i doubt that has anything todo with it though???

For laptop/pc based diagnostics buy either an ELM323 or 327. For handheld based codereaders (not as flexible) look for a U380 or handheld code readers that are EOBD compatible. Have a look on ebay - very cheap.

Your car needs to be EOBD compliant too (Petrols Jan 2001+, Diesels Jan 2004+)

Some of the older fiats are EOBD compliant but, more often than not, they are not.

Look

The "Check engine" beep just seems to sometimes randomly happen. Well, at least it does on mine. Nothing's wrong with it and it ends up clearing itself up after a few restarts...dodgy connection somewhere me thinks, though trying to locate it doesn't look like the easiest.

I haven't got a fault code reader yet, but looks like I'll need to get one at least just to try and eliminate this erroneous message. The pointless "beep, beep, beep" is starting to do my head in :bang: :bang:

Of course, this doesn't mean that your engine fault isn't real, but if there's no performance issue, it could well be nothing. Fiat will charge almost £70 just to diagnose a problem, so a £35-40 for a code reader makes sense at least just for your piece of mind.

Hi All
I get the “beep” at least once a week usually just shut down and restart and it’s gone.
Have noticed it’s more frequent in heavy rain or very cold conditions, usually the oil level sensor.
I have now reverted back to dipping the oil and checking the water manually and just ignore the warnings, Fiats have always been renowned for crap electrics (I’ve owned four different models) so just live with it.
The stilo is not a liked car by most that’s why they tend to be cheap, the reason they are not liked is the crap electrics, if as I do you can ignore the false warnings you have got yourself a good fun car.
Good luck

I suspose i have had a good run with it as its really the first time its misbehaved like this since i have had it so im not going to grumble, im just going to ignore it and see what happens in the mean time.

I could buy a reader if i was so inclined but to be quite honest as long as it is going and not misbehaving then i am happy and who knows it might go away!!!

Just looking at the ELM323 or 327 code readers on ebay for around 25 quid is that the ones you mean.

Like i said im not bothered really but 25 quid aint much is it. Which one would be better for a jtd i think it was made june o4 so sould be able to use one of these readers.

Thanks

Both are OK either way.

but if your JTD is not OBD compliant (I wouldn't count on it for an 04) then you'll also need to buy special software.

Best to read many of the JTD code reading threads and then decide.

well just been out in it and no engine light on this morning, So i think it was having a hissy fit after the thrashing it had xmas morning.

So thanks for all your help.

It's been said many times on here that the Stilo electronics depend on having a good electrical supply from the battery. Several erroneous faults can be triggered if the battery is even slightly below par.

A few weeks ago my JTD started beeping and showing various faults and warning lights and the CN+ screen started flickering whilst starting. The car still started OK but I knew it was time for a new battery.

I have replacement parts breakdown insurance with the AA so called them out. The patrol (one I didn't know and who turned out to be a 'jobsworth') did all their prescribed tests on the battery, including a 15 second drop test (no he didn't drop the battery:).... just turned the engine over on the starter motor for 15 seconds without it starting to measure volt drop under load). He said the battery was OK and therefore I couldn't have one on the insurance. I was still convinced it was the battery so bought a new one myself the next day. Ever since then, no beeps.... no faults.... no warning lights.... no screen flickering.

If your car was built in June 04 (you can check the month and year it was built by entering your VIN in ePER), then it must be EOBD compliant. European law said that petrol cars sold in Europe from January 2001 or diesel cars sold from January 2004 must be EOBD compliant. For new production models the time limit was January 2000 for petrol and January 2003 for diesel but it was extended 1 year for existing models so that manufacturers had time to sell off existing stock. If yours was built in June 2004 then it couldn't have been sold before January 2004.

Dave.

Try telling that to stilosporting who bought an 05 model.

He's had dreadful trouble reading codes and basically proven it's NOT OBD compliant :(

It's all in that very long ELM323 thread I started if you want to read it.

Argo..... I think I've read just about every post about every type of OBD on here and most that I can find on the web. I even found some internal Fiat documents that listed specifications for various protocols including FIAT9141.

I was hoping to find something that would read my January 03 built JTD including manufacturer codes. I've given up now. One of my brothers is still an AA patrol and their laptop can read everything on the Fiat. Last time I used it, it even read the injector grades (I didn't know that diesel injectors were graded like pistons) and their flow rates. It uses Crypton software but I can't find any reference to it as being available anywhere.

Funny you should mention this but my JTD reported the dreaded "loose connection" message this rather cold morning. 100% apart from that and the battery did struggle a little so reckon it was purely a voltage issue.

Pretty good going really for a battery that's over 6 years old (y)

Just hoping I don't encounter -20°C temperatures when I pop over to Paris next week

Mine lasted almost 6 years. I bought a Unipart 096 (650CCA 75Ah) from Partco for £47.36 + VAT trade price. It was £79.90 + VAT retail. It's the biggest battery that fits in the Stilo battery compartment.

Bon Voyage. Do you want a 2008/2009 CN+ map disc for France?

Dave.

Just to add. If Davren or anyone else has an ELM323/327 and has some spare time and doesnt mind using hyperterminal, drop me a PM. I might have some commands you can try to get you going on your non compliant diesels/petrols.

Its not a pretty solution, but seems to work on older cars and if it works for some people/I get some good feedback Ill knock up a guide.

Dan

Sorry for hiijacking the thread btw.

Thanks for the offer Dave but I'm well prepared this year. Last year discovered my old map didn't show a rerouted motorway access road which had me going in circles until I realised what was going on . I'd turned off motorways & toll roads on the GPS and was having lots of fun on the D13 until my passengers mutinied and insisted I took the motorway :( - so I blame them

This time I've got recent maps for Navigon with backup system from TomTom and Destinator :)

Well it seems that the egr valve, overboost valve or the maf thingie is playing up as now i have a totally gutless peice of junk which cant even rev over 3500 rpm.
I have had the egr and the overboost valve done so i assume its the maff thingie.

Just off todo a search and see what i can find.

Just been searching and found out if you disconnect the maff plug it might make a difference, it has made a diference but its still a bit flat. But the strange thing is -3 this morning and the car was fine, get into car after work and hmmmmmmm tis dont feel right. The turbo isnt coming in either but i suspose if the maff isnt working that might have something todo with it anyway.

So can i take it that the maff is kaputt or could there be something else, I am going to ring huttons in the morning anyway as have a busy new year so need to get something sorted.

Thanks
