Disco Dashboard

I need help. I have a Stilo 115JTD estate but it has developed a weird problem last thursday coming home in the dark the dashboard went out I had no instruments then after about 2 miles all came back on and went through the start up sequence everything was ok until i got about a mile from home then did it again. Next morning when i got in the car the clock had reset to 1st Jan 2001 and the clock was showing 12:25 this was 7:30am the trip computer was at _ _0, again driving to work the same happened going of then on about 4 times, all weekend it was fine only the clock seems to be reseting itself when got in the car, then today all started over again going off then on. Is this something simple to fix like an earth or is the dashboard f*****d need your help to see if I can solve the problem.

Re: Disco Dashboard

As all your dashboard gauges are going out and the dashboard is being reset too then i'd go for a power supply problem either from D4 connector or the connector at the back of the dashboard gauge cluster

I'd separate the D4 connector and spray with contact cleaner, dry then reconnect

Then I'd take out the dashbaord gauges and clean the contacts of the connector and where the connector meets on the dashboard cluster itself

Re: Disco Dashboard

which one is the D4 connector as there are so many on the fuse board does anyone have a simple diagram for help, update the dashboard went dead today and as not comeback on checked supply to fuseboard ok and earth ok disconnected battery and left for 1/2 hour but still no joy, pulling at straws now, will look at D4 when I find out which one is this. HELP:bang:

Re: Disco Dashboard

Ok an update checked D4 and all seems ok dry and clean pain to get to, It does look more likely to be a supply or earth problem probabley to the dash itself, anyway I booked the car into and auto electric place on Friday so we will see whats what then, cost £40 for diagnostic, keep you all updated, good job the car as private warranty.

Re: Disco Dashboard

ok they did a diagnostic but to no avail, they suspect dashboard fault and this would be a dealer job so there we have it, will have to go to the dealers and get ripped off, all this and the MOT is up next week so have no choice, unless i can find a secondhand dash quick, anyone any ideas?

Re: Disco Dashboard

...will have to go to the dealers and get ripped off....
I don't understand this mentality

Any dealer will charge no more than an hours labour to be connected to Examiner and some will only charge 30 mins.

You could have put they £40 you've already spent towards that cost (would have paid for half an hour easily)

Re: Disco Dashboard

Had similar problem once before but I could never get it to reproduce the fault. Eventually (8th visit!) it did it & quickly checked (covers left off & cluster sat in position) supplies/CAN signals at cluster multiplug (all ok)...new cluster sorted this one.

Another one (this was years ago) was caused by a sparkplug breaking down underload & spiking CAN system, did'nt reset clock but made lights come on/off & gauges rise/fall.

Re: Disco Dashboard

Booked into dealers, shown them the diagnostic report i had, the cost for repair new dash and labour £435 although they will do diagnostic free of charge because already done, if it only a connection would be cheaper, they will do a fixed labour charge of £110 for everything then if dash £325 including vat, but said that is maximum cost, will also give a free courtesy car because until they have done a diagnostic check they wouldn't order the parts,so car will be off the road for 4 days, so spending the £40 first was the way to go because they charge £75

Re: Disco Dashboard

:DOk update just had a new dashboard fitted by Startins Fiat Dealer in Redditch very good the cost of the new dash was £225 plus £30 labour plus vat so was a lot less than i thought plus I had a courtesy car for the day, problem now cured all works as should be, the only thing is because they couldn't get the old dash to work the mileage couldn't be verified so i now have a car with 16miles on the clock they need proof of mileage before they could program the mileage in, as i had it MOT'd recently passed 1st time they can take it off the certificate.:)

Stilo dashboard problem

Hi wonder if anyone can help, my husband's Stilo was working perfectly until we went on holiday for 2 weeks. On our return my husband went to drive it and found that the dashboard was completely blank apart from 2 warning lights (ABS and ESP I think). Everything appears to be functioning correctly eg indicators, lights, etc and the car is driving perfectly but we are just not getting any response from the dashboard readouts eg. rev counter, milometer, clock, indicators, etc, etc. Fuses have been checked and nothing there. It has been into Fiat and they have said that it requires a new part (not sure exactly what but it costs £350.00 and takes about half an hour to fit) - also, it can't be fitted by our local garage as the part is coded. Having had a similar experience with Renault diagnostics when they replaced an airbag computer for what turned out to be a broken connection I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts/advice to offer.

Re: Stilo dashboard problem

i once repaired a dashboard with similar failure by removing oxidation on the printed circuit board , near the microprocessor.
I was only noticable with a magnifier glass but enough to shorten pins of the cluster and causing trouble as you described....
You might have a look before you buy a new unit - i guess there is also the possiblity to buy a reconditioned one but often you have to ask for that option as a lot of dealers prefer to sell a new one instead of the reconditioned unit.

Re: Stilo dashboard problem

The part you mention will be the cluster that they want to replace. You mention it is coded which i believe is true as it has to be proxy aligned to the body computer of the car using an Diagnostic Examiner. Most small garages won't have the examiner to do this process which means you'll have to use dealer or an independant Fiat/Alfa specialist who have the Examiner equipment, where abouts in the UK are you?

As yellowstilo says it may be an oxidised connection causing issues but i wouldn't know where to start with checking that i'm afraid.

There was an issue on Ford Focus' where the clusters kept failing and dealers replaced with brand new units at cost to the consumer, Watchdog found people that had cleaned the circuit boards and connectors and got the cluster working again with no future problems. If you know someone with the expertise it may be worth a try :)

Re: Stilo dashboard problem

I had similar problem - except I didn't get the ABS/ESP warning lights.
Speedo blank, Rev counter blank etc. I know you said the fuses OK but did you check them or was it the garage. All I did was push every fuse in the fuse box below the steering wheel and everything OK since.
