I know this might be a repost and I'm sorry for that but I need your help.

This morning I start up the car goes through the checking and engine management light pops and it says engine fault. Has been fine since I got her in May & she was fine last night when I finished work and I haven't had any issues (except the key fob but thats fixed now). She doesn't cut out or judder or loss of power ........... she just fires up and goes just like it were any other day.

I need your help please any ideas......I'm thinking about disconecting the battery and seeing if that will clear the fault................please help:worship:

Switch off switch on and see if its cleared.. if not report back..many faults crop up at the first start of the day..low voltage..make sure she goes through her checks first before you turn the key to fire her up..

You need a fault code reader. If you don't need now then you will certainly need it in the future. Just clearing a recorded fault without finding out what it's telliing you first isn't a good idea. Treat yourself and buy one today as an early Xmas present:)

Always make a note of any stored fault codes before you clear them. If you aren't experiencing any running problems then leave the code there until you find out what it's telling you

Turned her on and she goes through the checks before starting the car.......no engine fault.

Start her up and beep beep engine fault:(

I'm skint have to wait till pay day for that unless if the g'friend will let me have some money of her..............doubt that very much as she says I give the car more attention than her but the truth be told I hate a dirty car so I wash it at least once a week

I've been considering doing this for a while now Decks, any suggestions on a decent low cost reader as Mrs Ffoxy has a 1.2 Stilo and I have the GPS. Something that would read and clear codes on both would be cool, any suggestions from your experience?

Cheers...

Dirty car or dirty girlfriend hmm ...choices:)

But seriously, if you want an even bigger garage bill then remove all evidence of what fault codes are stored before you take it in and leave them to find out the hard way what is actually wrong whilst you're paying for their time.

"Oh I cleared the fault code but I think it was a P0 and there was a 3 in it I'm sure" is a techs nightmare and you pay for it with your wallet

Ffoxy
They change and get better all the time. Just about everything will read and clear basic codes. Do a search for what people here have bought recently and are using successfully

This is cool for an OBD bluetooth wireless connection with your PDA for someone viewing live data whilst you're driving around. You'd need a serial bluetooth connection. It'll read and clear codes of course. Just shows how things are moving along but you don't need anything as fancy or expensive as bluetooth

Clean car & dirty girlfriend:eek:

So just take it into the garage and let them find out whats wrong with her.............is that what you're saying Decks. But what I find starnge is she was fine last night and now she's just sick:(

No I mean buy a fault code reader for around £20 to £30 (or find a girlfriend that's got one) and find out what the fault code is BEFORE you think of taking it to a garage. Post up here what the fault codes are then you can find some help maybe

A garage will charge at least that to do it for you and every time. You only buy a reader once:)

Probably pregnant then:)

In some of the posts I read you were selling some. Are you still in business??? and thanks I've called up a good garage I use down the road and they'll look at it as soon as I take it to them......fanks(y)

Yes disconnecting the battery clears all volatile stored data in the ecu so fault codes, fuel trims etc will be erased. Many faults will not fire a fault until the same problem has occured on a number of occasions ie it's not a glitch

Hope not, but if it does pop up again then you'll know what to do:)

Have had this exact same problem for almost the entire ownership of my Stilo. Coincidentally a 1.2. It'll randomly flash up "Check engine" with the beep, beep, beep, but no performance issues occur. Then, 3 or 4 restarts later, it'll disappear for a random amount of time, sometimes days, weeks even months.

It didn't happen for around 3 or 4 months and then started again 2 weeks ago. I'm viewing it as more of a niggle than a major problem, though I'll get one of those fault readers in the next few weeks for investigative purposes.

For reference, it's happened once or twice when I took it to the dealer for work and they simply said it was a loose connection. When I took the car away from the garage on each occasion, it was fine. Well, for a while. Wonder if it could be a loose connection somewhere, I guess the fault reader would pick up on that anyway.

Just like to say thanks again fella's for all your input.................it was much appreciated;). You guys make owning a car with as much problems like the stilo look like walk in the park really thanks(y)
