Hi guys,

My stilo started cutting out, so I had the crank shaft sensor replaced (as diagnosed by the computer), now the car wont start at all.

I've had the diagnosis done again and it reports no faults.

I've called the local fiat main dealer and I have been told that these other computers may have caused that problem. Is there any truth to this? And have you got any ideas why it won't start?

I'd appreciate any input you have.

Dave

Hi mate,

Sounds like the new crankshaft sensor may not be seated correctly. If its a few mm out then it wont work. The rubber washer at the base can make it hard to get all the way in sometimes. Worth a check. Also worth checking the wiring connector. Do you know what diagnostic equipment was used?? Very unlikely that it will have caused your problem.

Wouldn't a poor fit still show up on the diagnostics though?

I don't know which diagnostics he's used. He told me he's used a couple.

Bit confused here, you "had the crankshaft sensor replaced"... by someone else or the dealer / agent that did the computer diagnosis?
Did the car start when you collected it after it was done?
I have heard (anecdotally) that "other" diagnosis systems" can cause problems but others on here are better placed to respond to that.
If the car worked when you collected it and the sensor has been replaced it has either, moved, failed again or another fault has occurred.

depends what diagnostics was used, but if it was a few MM out, then it just wouldn't receive a signal whereas the sensor itself would still show as being within parameters.

Ok, full story.

The diagnostic was done at my mates garage, by a mate of his.

The first computer showed no problems, so he used a second one.

This showed the crank shaft sensor problem.

He replaced the part, but the car still won't start.

He performed another diagnostic (which I assume was the one that discovered the fault initially). It came back with nothing.

He's checked the car manually for loose pipes etc. But still no luck.

He then got someone else's diagnostic (fiat/alfa one apparently). Which reported no error.

And this is where we are now, confused and very annoyed.

The car is still at my mates garage while I research either a solution or a local fiat specialist.

Then when the fiat guy said I may need a new ECU, I decided to pull some hair out.

Please help guys, this is really annoying

Does it have an ignition imobiliser? The aerial for those have been known to fail. Causes starting failure, as it would. Just a thought. (y)

How would I know it I had one of those? I know it has an immobilisor.

I know the starting motor tries to get the engine going.

Try a Search in the Stilo section I am pretty sure this has come up a few times and the fix is in the steering column / ignition switch area... sorry cant be of much help.

The funny thing is, my problems started on the day the car was due its service.

Right, Just called the guy.

The engine starts, but it wont rev, and then it cuts out.

Any ideas?

Throttle position sensor, MAF, its just guesswork if there are no codes to go on. Wont be the imobilizer tho if it starts. Could be fuel related I guess, need to check for contiued sparks when it cuts out.

There wont be spark as its a diesel. Still defiantely sounds to me as if the new crank sensor either hasn't been fitted correctly, or is faulty. After all the crank sensor is what is controlling the injection timing. If its too far away, it will be getting a weak signal, hence not revving and cutting out. I would stick the old crank sensor back in and see if it starts..... at least then you can rule it out and look elsewhere.

Whereabouts in the country are you?

Alan

Failing all that try a PM to Argonaught he is the Stilo section Moderator and very clued up.

Im in Swansea mate.

I'll let my mate know about your suggestions, thanks.

Right ok

He picked my main key up.

Tried to start the car and the car reported water in the fuel.

Any suggestions on this?
