hi can anyone confirm if jtd 16v has one of these?and where is it? have been on eper and can only find a temperature sender that looks like it fits to the thermostat housing.i have no problem with temperature gauge comes up slow n smoth n sits at 1/2 way mark but now outside temps are dropping again am getting a blue cloud on start up which am now convinced is extra fuel to start but is not necessary as temp has been 10*c to 13*c on last few occations.

Hi mate,

Temperature sender and cold start sensor are the same thing on the JTD. Its on the right hand side of the engine by the thermostat, as you said.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Thought you said your motor has been chipped for higher fuel pressure :chin:

A blue cloud of smoke is often caused by lazy glow plugs. Turn the key to the ON position and leave it for 5 seconds before starting. You should not have any blue smoke then. If that is the case, it is time for new glow plugs.
This is exactly what my standard JTD 115hp is doing at the moment. I will get round to changing the plugs soon.

yes it has, but first thing i did last winter was disconnect it and run it standard and it made no difference coldish weather it smokes standard and chipped, warmish weather it doesnt standard or chipped.box has been on and off many times for smoke and slipping clutch tests and sure box has nothing to do with this problem.
will order that cold start sensor then and give it a go,thanks.(y)
and will get round to testing glow plugs at same time what resistance am i looking for?

Around 1.1- 1.4ohms for each glow plug. You can do the test at the wiring connector for the cold start module to save trying to fiddle about at the glowplugs themselves.

Normally when they fall outside these tolerances, you get a warnign message. But worth checking anyway.

thanks for that just found argos guide for glow plug message(had it in my mind id be looking for 200 ohms odd, always best to ask if not sure).not convinced its gonna be that cos last time weather was bad tried a lot of variations of either starting without waiting for light, waiting for light, waiting for light twice(2 cycles), and even 3 heat cycles.all i got was a low battery due to short trips in between and smoke didnt get any worse or better, plus it always starts first turn and when it smokes it doesn't sound or feel like its struggling it just starts normal.

Sorry, I just realised you had a 16V JTD,
These have a reputation for smoking when cold starting. There have been several threads on this topic with someone even taking theirs to a dealer who said it was normal and they could not fix anything or stop it.

Also, there is no such thing as a cold start sensor. That is a term for 10 year old cars with very basic ECU's in them. There is only one temperature sensor on a JTD, and if your temperature gage is reading correctly, it is OK. I believe the MAF also has a air temperature sensor built into it. Maybe you should change the MAF first.

Yes MAF has a temp sensor in it. I would suggest simply unplugging it and start from cold. If the smokes still there, then its not your MAF. If the MAF temp sensor was faulty, I would expect smoke when warm as well, but its always worth a go when its so simple to test.
