Hi,

Does anyone know what size hex key is needed to undo the filler plug? Need to check the oil level. :)

Thanks

EDIT: 1.2 Stilo

For future reference, the 1.2 Stilo gearbox filler and sump plug is 12mm. :)

Ignore my above post, I was talking ******** about the size of the gearbox sump plug, Morty Mort was right, its 8mm with the filler plug 12mm. Apologies.

Anyways, since the weather's gotten slightly better I finally got around to replacing the lube today with some Tutela and the difference is amazing! Changing into first, second and reverse is a hell of lot smoother than before. The old oil was completely black with crap; new stuff looks like olive oil, boy does it stink though, lol. :yuck:

I'd thoroughly recommend replacing your tranny lube if its never been done! (y)

P.S. If you're replacing the oil on a 1.2 or 1.4 6 speed box, the lower box mount gets in the way of the drain plug so its nearly impossible to get a hex socket and ratchet in to undo it. What I did was use a standard 8mm allen key and a pipe for some leverage. :)

How often should you change gearbox oil anyway?

I think Fiat say you only have to make sure its topped up; not actually change it. However, I found it made a huge difference in gear changes and doesn't cost much to do. The oil is about £6 a litre (needed less than 2l for the 1.2 box) and its really straightforward with basic tools.
