im having a squeaking noise coming from near end off my car ........ when driving but noise stops if brake or go above 40 mph and it just had new brakes on 700 miles ago... does any one know what it could be? could it be a simple thing like who fitted them didnt use cooper greese when was fitted?

Sounds like mine, being going on for over a year and everytime its gone in, no fault found. I am certain it's coming from the rear pads. It comes, it goes, so far it it hasn't come back for 2 months. The car had only done 80 miles over 15 months when I bought it so I suspect the rear discs were corroded and a bit of corrosion is trapped between the pad and disc. Will know when I change the rear discs and pads next year.

Haha, god im not the only one then, when im driving about 40mph or over get like a like squeaking noise, sounds as if somethings rubbing, took it into quick fit to have a look and they said there was nothing wrong, just had a 'rusty nib' on the disk which will eventually wear off, this was 3-4 months ago and still no joy. But im now looking into replacing my disks and pads all together.

Depends how big the rusty nib is, you could need new rear discs but they should last a good few thousand miles as the fronts do most of the work.
Could be worth stripping the whole lot down and cleaning everything, if you haven't done many miles or only do short trips then the lack of use can be as bad as heavy use.

It is common for the brake disk inner covers to rub on the disks causing a squeak. It is usually most noticeable when going round a corner. It is just a case of take the wheel off and bending the thin metal cover away a bit so it is no longer touching the brake disk.

the disc are fine mate ive only done about 1000 miles on them .... i just hate driving my stilo now as when brake every one looks at me its so loud lol :|:(

That's what I thought ;)

I'd take it back to whoever fitted the pads. If the rear is squealing but the fronts are OK (with same make of pads fitted) then it suggests something isn't right.

yep ive been back theyve cleaned them up put them back and said i need new pads because of the dust they started binding... but they arnt rushing for the pads its been a week hopefully this will sort it buts its on warrenty so i cant really go any where else unless i want to pay again. im thinking would upgradeing to green stuff pads be better then just standard pads to prevent this from happening again?

Green stuff are OK provided you also fit the backing material (they'll squeal if you don't - often after a month or so).

TBH, if I did it again then I'd fit genuine oem pads as they come with the backing pre-fitted (which makes the job easier) and they don't squeal at all (y)

well i will see how they are after they fitted these new ones for free... and if no better i will pay for green stuff ones i think..

thats the only thing that lets down my stilo at the moment i think squeaking brakes and a exhaust that sounds like its blowing when its hot even though its not :(. apart from that its a really nice car

had the rears sorted out now the fronts are just left squeaking there fine jus slowing down but when your coming to stop thw squeal loud and these are not even that old about 2 months /1000 miles what could be wrong with these i was speaking to a freind who said the pads quick fit , fit are really cheap pads there composition is so hard it cuases this is it true?

I've had this problem for 2 or 3 years.

I've had pads and discs replaced already once, and it went away, but it's back again.
Strangely enough, I've just had my tyres replaced, and it seems to have gone away.

Think my Stilo does the same

It only seems to make a lould kinda groning noise when I am revercing or braking.

Took it into Fiat when I first got it, and they said it was because something rubs????

Just cos im a girl, dont think they wanted to help!!??!!

Drop it into one of those free brake test centres and get it checked. If you don't trust them then just get a 2nd opinion from another brake centre.

It's not worth taking risks with brakes :(

So long as Kwik-Fit fitted the pads then it's down to them to stop them squealing (don't they give life time warranty anyway :chin:)

Go back and complain

yeah they do .. but they tell me some BullS**T about how it will stop and will only change them when worn or poor performance im going to tey going to a different quick fitt centre...
