my brake lights seem to be staying on as the pedal seems to be very loose or something. dread taking it to fiat again as was down before and they couldnt even work out why it was staying on.

Basically when i pull the pedal up the lights go off, but when i let it back down on its on they come back on.

Anybody know how to fix it?

cheers

Alan,

As mentioned above, it just needs the brake light switch re-setting. I needed to do this on my Abarth this weekend gone, and have also done it on the wifes 1.8.

Its a 60 second job. Remove the switch (can be fiddly) pull the plunger out, put the switch back in place and let the brake pedal up slowly.

Job done. (y)

aw thank god! dont have to go to crappy fiat dealer, thanks a lot guys!

yeah just done it there now, so its all grand and working again! thanks a lot again! was starting to worry the old trusty fiat electrics were giving way on me haha!

1 question though, could it be because my switch is nakered that the wee plunger is going up 2 far? or do you think will be ok now?

thanks

It's very easy for the brake light switch to go out of adjustment. For example: if your foot slips off the pedal and it springs back up or if your foot were under the pedal and pulled it up from it's rest position.

If it keeps happening then you'll probably need a new switch.

Dave.

I have developed a similar problem to what you describe after retro fitting the 147 cruise control stalk and was worried that this loosening of the brake pedal at the top of its travel was the brakelight switch itself... as my MOT is looming large in the not too distant future! :(

Glad the potential fix is this simple :D

Re. Fiat electrics... the brake light switch failed on my previous 1.6 Stilo together with the coil pack on No. 2 cylinder... my mate whom was following me nearly ended up parking his Mondeo on my back seats

Just an update, you don't need to remove the switch, just some long nosed pliers to pull the centre plunger out. Even easier:)

Cruise wouldn't come on on the way back from Birmingham last night so I tapped the underside of my brake pedal, a little too hard (n) and the brake lights stuck on

Sorted in the daylight early this morning with... long nosed pliers and switch in situ, cheers Decks (y)
