Hi i am going to be servicing the car on Saturday so was just wondering how to drop the oil as i have never actually serviced a car myself.
Thanks

Stuart

i paid £60 to have it serviced from a garage..
they removed service due warning
stamped book,
provided all the parts...

is it not worht paying £60 for them to do it?

the changed oil, oil filter, spark plugs, took brakes apart to clean them...

bargain

it was the cars 1st service aswell

Did they use fiat parts ..? if they didnt your warranty is now void..

Uuurm all well and good but i aint gonna find it for that price anywhere plus i want decent oil, and NGK plugs gonna flush it through aswell as this is its third year so i would imagine its a bit Gunky especially considering i was driving on nearly empty for a couple of months:mad:.
So can anybody tell me

If that's true then coyle's advice is maybe not so far off :chin:

First thing is make sure you've got the tools to remove sump plug and check if you can get a good grip on the oil filter to remove it by hand.

I'd recommend you buy an oil drain tray (any good motor store) as it can be very messy.

When engine is warm:
  1. Crawl under car in your worst clothes, with tray in correct position, and carefully remove sump plug. Be VERY careful when doing this as hot oil can burn you badly and you'll almost certain to get a fair bit on you
  2. Now try to unscrew the oil filter. If it's too hot to get a firm grip on then wait until it cools a little. Same warning applies here about the hot oil (if working from underneath) so take care.
  3. Wait say 20/30 minute for all oil to drain
  4. Fit New filter
  5. Replace sump plug (with a new washer if doing the job by the book)
  6. Fill with oil (don't get carried away when filling as it takes time for the oil to get to the sump)
  7. Do a final check only when car is level

Enjoy!

Really simple job on the 1.6 and you havnt got an under tray [if memory serves me well] you will need an allan key its 12mm one for the sump plug and you can get one from hellfrauds..you can get a good quality oil and a filter for euro car parts [cheapest around I found] and if you want to flush it use forte its simply the best..if you need any other info then ask and I will take you through it step by step.. as Agro has done (y)

Right cheers guys doesnt seem too difficult, i just wanted to check that there werent going to be any hidden surprises (like changing the washer i will get hold of one i would imagine most motor factors would sell them?)
I went with mobil oil simply because i used to work on a lot of cars that carry the logo which is sooo easy to place when doing the graphics on cars so hopefully it will make the job easy aswell (i know its a bit of a silly reason but Karma and all that).

So i would imagine that the engine needs to be a little warm so the oil is slick when i empty it.

I got some flushing fluid that was from Hellfrauds for £5 so that will do.

I take it there arent many horror stories of the oil gushing out everywhere making a mess of the surrounding area because my mum would do her nut.

Id be a little careful which flushes you use actually. Some dont have lubricants in them, and they dont recommend you drive the car with it in. :(

I always use forte products, it has built in lubricants in its flushes and you can drive the car with the flush it to get the best from it. Then the oil stays clean until the next chage!(y)

Also, when your servicing it, give the throttle body a clean (again i use forte air intake cleaner for this). Its real easy o do on the 1.6 stilo, and i bet you will notice the difference afterwards. :D

Yeah, just make sure your oil tray is positioned right under the sump plug, or it will go everywhere!

You cant beat forte and you can get it on eBay very reasonably priced ..I drove around with it in the engine for about 25 miles before I flushed it and it really got rid of some crap out of the system.. if your stuck for a drain pan just cut the side out of an old 5lt oil can and use that..just be careful of the initial surge of oil as you release the sump plug..you should be ok with the original washer on the plug and it will have to be well and truly screwed to need replacement..when replacing the oil filter try and part fill it with fresh oil and be certain to smear the rubber seal on the filter with fresh oil before you screw it into place and tighten it down..if you have problems getting the filter off then machine mart carry come good tools for oil filter removal..good luck (y)

Great advice (y) Thats exactly what i do too!

I wouldnt use any other products other than forte either, they really do work. :)

Good luck with the servicing!

As already said, when dropping the sump plug you will get oil on you. Wear gloves as oil is Cancernargenic (sp?).

As for oil filters, I'm not sure what acess is like on the Stilo, but if you have poblems moving it by hand I tend to use one of those plastic things with the rubber strap on you can use to remove lids from glass jars. Works a treat (y)

Best of luck, not that you'll need it as it's normally fairly simple :)

Jon.

All done no probs didnt have gloves so got a bit oily. Then dropped the sump plug in the can  But she running nice now.

Well done mate not hard is it ..its easy to drop the sump plug in the oil ..done it loads of times myself ..but always fun having to wiggle you fingers in the oil pan to find it..:yuck: :p
