Selenia Oil question

I just made the run from Milton Keynes to the dealer in Northampton to buy some Selenia oil since I was running a little low. Since it is a bit of a hike to Northampton just to buy oil, I asked the parts guy if the Selenia oil could be purchased anywhere else other than Fiat. His answer surprised me. He said just to buy Castol GTX Magnatec at Halfords. I asked if it was the same, and he said it was. Is this true?

Thanks.

Not sure if I like "it will do". Think I'll be safe and stick to Selenia. Thanks for the help.

Its not the same, but as good, Castrol is excellent oil, the only reason Fiat use selena is to do with corporate alliances, like citreon recommend Total.

Any oil of the same properties will do the same job, its much like using different brands of petrol.

What I was concerned about was mixing the Castrol with the Selenia. Say I was a litre down on Selenia, would it be okay to mix with the Castrol. I know mixing oils of different viscosities is a bad thing. I would hate to void my warranty because of something silly like that. I am sure for an oil change it would be fine, but how about for a top-up?

Thanks, once again.

I used to buy Selenia for my Punto but 10 for 2 litres became a bit much when you 4.5 litres of Castrol for about 15!

The oils should mix fine, as long as the ratings are the same. You wouldn't worry about mixing petrols would you?

True! I suppose I must be getting overly concerned in my old age.

You know I was so paranoid about buying a Fiat. When I left for the States 18 years ago, Fiats were not good. In the States, I got read the riot act once about mixing my oil, so that's why I am paranoid. Everyone there changes their oil every 3000 miles and rotates and balances their tires (sorry, tyres) every 6000 (in theory). Seems like things are done a little differently here, now I am back. But, I do miss the chepear petrol.

By the way, I don't know how old Twincamms is but I remember the day my mum came home with a new Beatles LP (Sgt. Pepper). That'll give you an idea of my age;)

Its funny how the past year i have seen in major supermarkets in the auto section that they sell oil and brands of oil you wouldnt normally see like selenia oil they had all of the brands racing,20k,and the gold. Plus in major hardware stores over here in greece have done the same. the only bummer (i believe the hardware stores should have at least had this) is that they dont have the oil filter. Mixing oils isnt bad as long as it is the same type usually make sure you let it drain good for a half hour and change the oil filter if you are changing brands.
