Morning,

When i started my Stilo yesterday to leave work, and again when i did this morning, if i rev or just dip the throttle i get quite a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust. By the time it's warmed up it's fine, is this anything to worry about?

Engine as you prob know already is a Multijet 16v 150.

Cheers

Are you parked on a slope at all?

whenever i start my stilo at home, it points down our drive which is on quite an angle (mines JTD). I sometimes get a bit of smoke out the back of it then but its nothing major :)

Whenever i start it up when im not parked on a slope, it hardly ever smokes, except when i accelerate.

No i'm on the flat, and it is only if a touch the throttle.

It's also waaay down on power. Probably just running rich at start up i guess?!

Doesnt sound good.

Blue smoke = burning oil

Black smoke = over fueling (running rich) as happens when you accelerate hard.

It sounds like you have a leaking valve guide seal. If it is under warranty, tell them you want it fixed. It is quite a complicated job to change them and it will get worse in time.

could possibly be a broken intercooler hose

i had a broken hose and it was smoking slightly more and lost about 10% of performance, can you hear a hissing noise at all when revving it ?

Hmm i've not really checked. Will open the bonnet up tomorrow morning and have a test to see what i can hear. Should i be able to warranty it at any dealer? Car was first registered oct 23rd 2006.

Please don't tell me i have to go down to the pissing place i bought it!

Cheers

You can always try a different fiat dealer (y). I did :D

It should be covered in the first 2 years of the warranty (hopefully), but not in the 3rd when mine went

You can here it from the inside of the car (with no music on), it is quite loud. Just listen for a whooshing/hissing noise when the turbo is on song

Why not covered in the 3rd? what happens then?

I'm backing the Leaky valve seal on this one. No hissing or anything today, just a TON of blue smoke at start up. To get the turbo spinning i have to have my foot flat on the floor for at least a second and a half when i first start it!

I thought turbo lag was a thing of the past but even when i'm driving it hard and in the power band there's at least a 1 second delay!

Spoke to local dealer this morning, said they'll get back to me! If i've not heard anything by 4 i'll give them a bell again.

Josh i've got some mates up in Leeds/York so next time i'm visting would be cool if we could compare notes etc!

Cheers

let us know how you get on,will hopefully get mine back to dealers for same thing in next couple of weeks,i have no real lag or power loss though just smelly blue smoke for a second or two on start up but only when its been standing 8hrs or so, overnight worse again.

Hiya mate are you losing any oil?

Well, i'm not losing any oil, well enough so that the dipstick is going down.

If there was excess oil in it'd all burn off stright away right, and wouldnt burn more off the longer you leave it?

If it is the valve seals will it be a lengthy job?

i really dont think this is anything to worry about, just unburnt fuel, iv seen your vid and its not excessive enough to worry, and if your reving when its cold it will, when engines are cold they run rich, the smoke you see is unburnt fuel coming through. in the days of the choke was the same, pull out to run rich, thats what the ecu does when its cold richens the mixture to stop it from stalling.

all diesels are rough when cold, especially this weather, when diesel sets like treacle;)

worry when it starts doing it warm(y)

these you 1st diesel cars:confused:

Vid? I've not made a vid!

Last service was when i bought it, so about 1k ago, and it's not been remapped as it was used as a Fiat Company car before i got it.

I'm pretty sure its not running rich now, the smell is pretty unmistakable!

Will see what the fiat dealer has to say on wed!

someone else on here with the same issue.

smell of oil per chance, thats pretty normal;)

i personaly wouldnt bother, but its not my car, i wouldnt worry til lights started to flash.

that was my vid on you tube, ive just done an air filter oil filter and oil change and used selenia wr as specified/recommended in handbook.made sure oil level is as close to half way as possible so can keep a check if its losing much as when i bought it had no idea what oil was in it and it was right up on top of dipstick so couldnt check if its been losing.anyway done 3 or 4 trips since oil change and its just as bad.i know people are saying its normal and dont worry but quite a few people in work have newish turbo diesels and ive never seen so much as a puff of blue or black for that matter, one fellas even got a rover 418td with 150,000 miles on it that he tows a caravan with and its totally clear on start up.just been out now to fill up with diesel and the cloud covered the length of the car.now i know its not oil level/spec i will be calling in on dealer this week also.

a. its not a high power diesel
b. you seen that 418 with a 1.9 peugeot engine, start in the morning after sitting still
c. if its only doing it once on start, in the morn, when cold, not to worry.
doing it when warm then yeah, dealer time.
d. remember the 1.9 mjet is just an updated jtd, dont even think these have particulate filters, which peugeot, vw, etc use, and this reduces smoke;)
