Hello all - Haven't been on for a while as my Stilo has been behaving quite nicely recently.

But then.....

A short while ago I started getting a horrible rattle that appears to be coming from the front drivers side wheel area. It appears at 40mph and sound like loose change in a washing machine. (not quite as loud)

The sound appears to go at around 60 - 70MPH but that could just be that its masked by the extra engine/road noise.

lots of threads about squeeks/rattles in the same area but this is a rattle no squeeking and no mention I can find of sounds apearing at certain speeds hence the new thread.

Any ideas????

spring snapped ? sounds like how mine was when it went. If you look at your spring there could be a small peice that has snapped stuck in the middle of it bouncing around

Thanks guys

I've got a day off tomorrow so I'll take the wheel off and have a route around.

- Check the spring
- Check drop links, I know what the drop links are but what am I looking for condition wise?
- I'll try the brake thing on the way home

Failing that there is an Italian chap in slough used to work for Fiat and Ferrari that replaced my steering rack when the power steering went (did it for peanuts compared to the quote I got from Fiat) cant find his details though. All I remember was he was called fernando (anyone know him?)

I managed to bust the front off side spring. Bounced the front corner but there was no rattle, only when i was driving along, as you say, at about 40. By the end of the day it had worsened, burning smells, odd sounds, vibrations and of course, still rattling like a good 'un.

Took it to the garage and snapped spring was the diagnosis, however it had also buckled the mount on th shock beyond repair and was wearing its way trough the tyre, (hence the burnt rubber smell). This is deeply un-cool when you're 17 and it's your first bloody car!

Get it repaired soon as possible, before it gets worse!

All repaired and 150 miles later....near side spring bust. What is it with these bloody cars??? Or is it just mine that's this bad?

Incidentally, how much should it cost to have one spring changed and a new shock as well, i was quoted £230, i thought this was quite expensive. What sort of price sounds right to you?

Had a good look around today with the wheels on so didn't get a good look.

-The springs look ok
- no play in the drop links
- found some play in track rod end drivers side

So I think I have found the culprit (the track rod end is the rod going into the back fo the wheel with a rubber housing on the end isnt it?)

Ive booked it in for the springs recall so I'll ask thames fiat slough to have a look while they are at it.

I'll keep you posted.
