Hello,
Im new on here........please be kind......lol...... Ive been looking at the threads covering brake light faults, all seem to say low level light failure due to faulty brake switch, however my problem is the high level brake light not working, could this be due to the same faulty switch or something else. Any advice would be much appreciated before I spend the next few hours up side down fiddling with the brake switch whilst blind folded and one hand tied behind my back.
Thanks again
Natty

Not so likely to be the switch this time as the low level afre working correctly, might be a faulty hi level unit or wiring in between so go for the easiest first. Check if power is getting to the hi level unit and that it has a good earth

Rather than strip into the hi level unit, see if you pull back the wiring weatherproof covering connecting the car roof to the rear hatch at the top of the hatch door and gain access to the wiring in there. White lead should be the hi level feed, black for earth. Use a stab wire circuit tester and see if there's power there with ign on and somone with their foot on the brake (or jam something between the driver's seat and the brake pedal). With ignition off, with a multi meter see if there is a connection between the black earth lead and a good earth spot somewhere (ie zero resistance)

F40 here is the hi level brake light
I30 is the brake light switch

The hi level is fed directly by the switch but the low level ones are controlled indirectly by the body computer

If you look at F40 then there's an internal resistor to stop the leds from blowing and a diode on the line to earth. either one of these blown and the whole unit is furbered unless you can take the unit apart and are handy with wiring the components in

Anyway, see how you get on with finding if power is going to the unit

I had the same problem with mine, turned out it was dirty connection, cleaned connection with a bit of emery cloth and switch cleaner, and now works fine.
