How do I know if this is low, will the gears become stiff and crunchy, is it something you can feel? Basically will I know it is low before a disaster?

Just wondered as I have had slight leak from driveshaft for about 6 months a trickle each night.

Thanks

There's no dipstick or means of measurement. All you can do is remove the upper plug (not the drain plug!) and top up until the oil begins to overflow. Obviously you need to be on level ground when doing so. On some models, topping up is a bit of a mission. I recently changed my g/box oil for Mobil SHC and had to fill up using a long plastic tube connected to a funnel. Made it easy though - it enabled me to fill from above the engine rather than grovelling underneath...

Are you sure on this? Have you read it somewhere? You should never completely fill a gearbox with oil. It always needs some air space. Usually most gearboxes are about half full of oil.

The filler plug wont be located at the top of a gearbox but at the side and will only allow the correct amount to be poured in and any more than that will flows back out ..so yellow peril is correct in what he says ..most garages have pumps to fill gearboxes and pump oil in and wait for over spill and then refit the plug ..I think machinemart sell a cheapo version of this ..

My JTD has a plug in the top of the gearbox. Petrol ones may be different though.

Cheers for all the advice, if it was low would my gears grind when I change them? Or are there other signs the level is too low?

Best to check the level, because often you will get damage to the box before there is any audible / obvious signs that anything is wrong.

This is at the front as you look down.

Is the drain at the bottom back of the gearbox?

I don't want to undo the drain instead of the filler :( lol
