Hi!
I have Stilo 1.8 year of make 2002. I have only done 17000 kilometers with it, But in the last 10000 km I had to put in almost 5 litres of OIL!!!! and also in my opinion and my fathers (very expirienced driver) this car performs badly and my gas consumpotion is also pretty high (not under 10 liters per 100 km with very normal driving)Is that normal? I heard that there was a lady having same car made same year with high oil consumption problem and fiat service had changed almost half of her motor plant. Is this problem known? Has anybody had this problem? What should I demand from Fiat service?

THX for replies.
Best regards, Matjaž

If it's using that much oil it definitely sounds like something isn't right.

As for the fuel consumption your figures equate to 28 miles per gallon which may be correct as you haven't stated your driving patterns (i.e. Motorway, City, etc) - if you can let us know where you do most of your driving we can probably advise a little better.

Fiat quote 1000 miles can equal 1 Litre of oil. When I quiried this with Fiat UK they said Alfas are a litre every 700 miles so I'm lucky!

[8)]Well, my driving consists mostly of short city routes, once a week i go to high way for 5 minutes and I step on a gas for a bit bu with speed not over 200 km/h.

Hornet: Is this Fiat quote for real? Since my car is going to be inspected for this matter on 13 of july, shoul I expect that they will say that my high oil consumption is normal? Does it not exist a known problem with to high oil consumption?

Best regards, Matjaž:p

Fiat UK state that upto a litre per 1000 miles is perfectly acceptable!

A lot of modern engines 'use' oil and is considered perfectly normal, though a litre per 1000miles would seem extreme.

Out of interest, what oil are using - is it a synthetic like the selenia 20k or Mobil 1?

Your petrol consumption is perfectly normal, if you drive mostly in the city. Unfortunately Stilo is not a very economic car. For the oil consumption I can't help, even though I think it's normal as well

when I was chatting with a former brava 1.8 owner, which being the same engine, he described the same issue, something to do with it being a pass thru oil design or something, keeps it clean anyway and stops the oil gunking up too badly, but does make it a tad expencive for the general topups

I had an on going argument about my new Punto eating oil as I was doing 1200 a month and putting a litre of oil in a month it went all the way to Fiat in the end and was settled with the above about 1 litre & 1000 miles being acceptable & that Alfa comment!

oil consumption on fiat engines seems to vary widely, I think it is partially down to how well they were 'run in' when new I know that they all say that you don't need to run in these days but careful driving in the first 1000km or so does seem to make a difference I am sure that cars which are driven hard from day one have heavier consumption later. My lancia delta which uses the 16 valve version of the old classic fiat twin cam engine noted for being fairly greedy on oil uses about 1 litre in maybe 5,000 or 10,000km (I don't need to top it up too often so it's difficult to give an accurate figure)the handbook quotes 1 litre per 1,000km, in the first 2,000 or so km it did about 2 litres per 1,000km though until it bedded in!

100% lancia ....with a hint of fiat

HI
FIRST WHEN MY OIL CONSUMPTION GOES OVER 1L/1000KM I THOUGHT THAT IS SELENIA IS BAD OIL.
THEN I BUY MOBIL1 0W40-ONE OF THE BEST OIL IN THE WORLD
AND CHANGE OIL AND FILTER ON 30000KM,NOW I HAVE 34000KM AND WHAT CAN I SEE WHEN I'M CHECKING THE OIL """"""MINIMUM""""""!!!!
4000KM AND 4 LITRES OF OIL GONE.
WHEN I START MOTOR IT SOUNDS LIKE DIESEL FOR ABOUT 5 SEC.ON 15000 KM I REPLACE THE THING CALLED "FASE VARIATOR" AND THEN WAS ALL OK,TODAY(34000KM)GUES WHAT MY STILO 1.8 HAS BECOME DIESEL AGAIN.
FIAT SERVICE TOLD ME THAT EVERY 15000-20000KM YOU MUST REPLACE FASE VARIAOTOR AND THAT IS NORMAL FOR FIAT CARS,200€ EVERY 6 MONTHS.
THIS IS NOT WHAT I'M EXPECT FOR 1 YEAR OLD CAR.

What engines in your 45?
Had a 200 with 1.4 16v K for my previous car which didnt require much topping up, maybe a litre every 2 months, or about 2500 miles at a guess

Hi boyz,

About my high oil consumption:

It was checked by my Fiat service and they found that oil was leaking on semering - not directly on it but on the screws that are holding it in place - they said tha this is known problem and they replaced semering and complete clutch (they thought some oil came to clutch - soo they replaced it too).

Anyway high oil consumption is not NORMAL in any way (like some of you sugested that 1 litre per 1000 km is still normal)!!

Please check your 1.8 16v motors for this problem - wich Fiaz knows about.

Best regards,

Tomideli
