Guys,

I have recently bought a Stilo and I must admit it was a bit of a last minute buy following an insurance claim, and just needing to buy something before the hire car went back. I used to have an Uno as my first car and thought it was fantastic! Though the Stilo is yet to prove itself!

Now on to the problem with my window washers - when I first acquired the car (about a month ago) the jets were just pathetic with no power and barely hitting the screen. Then at the weekend no more than a week dribble came out, so after sticking pins in holes and pumping hot water through the system nothing seemed to work, though occasionally there would be a good spurt at the start (0.0001 of a second) and then a dribble. I guessed that it was the pump on its way out - i could hear it working but nothing seemed to be coming out. So bought a new pump last night and rushed home to fit it thinking that all my troubles where over.................

Guess what? It didn't make a blind bit of difference!!! So took the black plugs out of the bonnet and stripped it to the Y splitter. Tried the jets when I had removed the Y section and the jet shot over the front of the car about 3 meters!!! Then got the section of tubing that run to the jets and blew through them - no problem, but the Y section was really poor so stuck cotton buds in and gave them a swizzle - came out black but didn't make it any easier to blow through. Noticed that the circular section of the Y section looked as if you could take the top off it - did that and this little plastic diaphragm came out that was deformed for a better word, where the water had perished it and was stopping the water from finding its way through. Result - I knew what the problem was and just needed to find a new diaphragm.

Ok I know what your going to say 'go out and buy a new Y section', but this has been bugging me for so long, and the fact that I had just bought a new pump and fitted it - so un-returnable, I was not about to give up. So.....slightly pikey-ish and I also consider myself as a bit of a Macgyver when it comes to problem solving I made a new diaphragm out of the grey rubber seal/ disc that you find on the inside of coke bottle lids- bit of a bugger to cut but works a treat - the diaphragm is only their to prevent the water draining back into the reservoir anyway and i could probable have super glued it up and it would have work just as well.

Just thought that I would post my experience and share the knowledge.

Also I know have a new washer pump for a Stilo '02 fitted but unwanted - so as new. If some one out there has tried all the tricks or the pump has actually died - let me know because it cost me £27 and I'm sure we could do a deal.

PS - WHAT A FANTASTIC FORUM
