Happier now

Provisionally the new MAF I fitted today ay my local garage has done the trick(y) Much smoother, the run to Watford for the RR day will be the test ;)

**edit** - Argo - didn't have the time to try the examiner on the car today to compare readings from old/new MAF..... they were short staffed today so whilst the garage owner sorted out some other stuff on my car ( that the dealers screwed up when it was in for its service) I fitted the MAF - and have the scars to prove it!

Hi,

After assistance yet again.

I am getting the syptoms as described throughout this thread. Today I tried to take off the MAF sensor but it looks like someone had already beaten me to it and have rounded the security torx bolts. I can get these out with brute force and molegrips, however, they won't be much use when I want to re-fit the sensor. Can anyone tell me where I can get these bolts/screws so I can take the sensor out and give it a good clean.

Tks

Ok I decided to check my airflow meter today, it passed the readings on examiner, I then fitted a replacement sensor and retested it. It passed again. However, the interesting thing was that the old unit reacted slower to airflow change, not measurable on a multimeter but when displayed as a graph on examiner recorder it was quite obvious. The drive home was very smooth and appears to have cured the fault. I will monitor the engine performance over the next few weeks but when you check your airflow meter a good unit will not only be correctly calibrated and reading accurately but will also react to airflow change quickly, and this change may not be obvious using a multimeter.

1.9 JTD 8v

idle speed: 850 ± 20 rpm

Engine at idle speed

Air measured with EGR valve open = 270 - 320 mg/cycle

Air measured with EGR valve closed = 400 - 530 mg/cycle

Engine at max speed no load = 650 - 1200 mg/cycle

NumanR, any chance of indicating which Examiner Graph Reading was used as I intend to get mine checked soon (due to the fact my JTD is not compatible with an ELM interface :()

Hi guys, just browsing through this section 'cos I've had this wierd erractic power loss thing since Chrimmo. (2002 52 plate 115 JTD Stilo Active 5 door with almost 90k on the clock, bought from new, by the way.) I drive 40 miles to work each day, each way on a Lake District A road, no motoways or dual carriageway, just cruising along between 40 and 65 mph, depending on the number of tractors, farmers, Eddie Stobart trucks, etc and enjoying a regular 58mpg. Out of the blue, the motor dies, I lift my foot off then push down again and power is restored. This can happen several times during the 1 hour journey and it's getting a bit of a bummer. It did it once when I was overtaking a truck, I'd dropped down to 3rd, took it up to 3.5k rpm and changed up as I accelerated past. As I changed into 4th, it just died! I did the off/on bit with the gas pedal and away it went!

I've had it at a local garage (non-Fiat) and their computer showed a fault with the turbo and a dodgy stop light switch! Could this really be just a faulty MAF? Just before Chrimmo I had the headlight bulbs changed at another non-fiat garage. They said they had to disconnect the battery, remove the tray and other bits, just to get at the back of the headlight units and it cost me £40! Plus £20 for the bulbs! Could their dis-assemby have anything to do with this latest fault?

Today's trip was even more weird - took she who must obeyed and 2 friends to a fancy hotel in the Lakes for their afternoon tea. 30 miles each way, funnily enough, on the same road as I take to work, the A595. The car behaved perfectly both ways, nary a stutter. However, during their afternoon tea, I drove off to Bassenthwaite Lake to take some photos. Driving there and back, about 5 miles, the car stuttered, engine died, then picked up again, several times! What the f*** is going on, Fiat?
