I have a stilo jtd, it is suffering from power loss and my garage says that I need a new mass air flow sensor.
a: is it something I can replace myself?
b: where can I get one?
c: do I really need to go to fiat and be shafted?

can anyone shed some light on this part please:cry:

I personally wouldn't bother with the cheap Chi-com imports. I stuck one on a Bravo HGT and it turned out to be faulty even though the ECU was saying it was fine. Imagine the needle in the haystack I had to find after that! Replaced with an original Bosch part and all was fine.

Guess we were just unlucky.

Its what the garage told me,I can only assume his diagnosis is correct. He has told me that is what he 'thinks' it is as I am not getting a error coming up on computer.

Is this something you can fit yourself?

Its possible to do yourself yes, have a look on the car IIRC it should be down and to your right (standing in front of car) by the airbox - a quick way to see if it is the air mass meter that is faulty is to disconnect the electrical connector and see if performance is better. Try http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-air-flow-meter-company also.

I do believe you don't have to replace the whole body unit on the Mass airflow, You can unscrew the Sensor (Bit with the plug on) & just replace that.

I wouldn't :( eLearn specifically advises against it (n)
Hi Argo.

What is eLearn ?? Is it an Electronic Users/owners manual Etc ??.
Surely if the Mass airflow was designed with that item removable, Then it should not create an issue !!, Once the sensor is withdrawn all that is left is the Plastic Body !!.

Cheers

Yes, I nearly did the same (as it looks so obvious) but after reading warning decided against it.

You can download eLearn from many file share systems or buy it from eBay.

saying that I know alfa owners on their yearly pilgrimage for another air flow meter buy a couple of cheap ones as it works out cheaper than their yearly one from dealer.
Based on my current experience (see ELM thread) I can recommend an even cheaper option.

Disconnect it and forget about it :D
