Wierd click/clunk on rear wheel [anti-rattle clips?]

Recently, I have been hearing a clicking/clunking noise under braking, regardless whether its light braking or heavey braking. At first I thought, oh poo, my driveshafts had it, as its a very similar noise to that kind of fault.

I got my old man to stand next to the car as I broke and he was determined it was coming from the rear wheel, passenger side. I didnt believe him as in the car it sounds like its coming off of the front end, so i stood outside the car, and he did the same and the clicking/clunking is coming off the rear passenger wheel.

Now, i havent had time to take the wheel off to look behind it as its always dark when im free, but obviously something isnt right. There is also a rattle from the back end when going over bumps, like something is loose, and in the rattle you can hear the noise.

Before I look has anyone got any ideas? I recently had the brake pads on the rear changed by a garage and im wandering if something is loose on the calliper, or that the self adjustment thing is not hooked up and is clicking as its missing adjusting and rattling because its loose. Braking is fine and the drive is fine. Another idea is a busted bush, but the car is not making the noise on the suspension, and the noise doesnt happen on every application of the brake or bump. (and like a i said it doesnt matter if its gentle braking at 40mph or 5mph or slamming on at 40mph or 5mph)

I have had a look under the car with a torch and cant see anything obvious, so the wheel does need to come off

Just wondering if anyone on here has had anything like this, or has an idea as to what it is as forum search hasnt picked anything up for me to go off

without sounding patronising, are you sure its not the rear subframe?

Sounds like either the caliper/carrier isn't fully tight, or maybe the brake pad anti-rattle clips are missing.

Pretty sure its not this, im more convinced its related to brakes as it was sudden, and thats the most recently touched part in that area, and from trawling through all the posts i dont have any of the other symptoms of subframe bushes

I know the wheel will have to come off to investigate further.

Nothings interfering with the braking, its just this noise isnt right. At least I know its not a drive shaft about to give out

re: Wierd click/clunk on rear wheel [anti-rattle clips?]

sounds very much like the caliper is loose... only held on to the hub/arm by 2 17mm headed bolts... if these were loose i would imagine a clunking/ kocking noise..... as the caliper is grabbing the disc and shifting

have you tried reversing then breaking then going forward and doing the same.. this would show it

* no anti rattle shims fitted
*loose caliper mounting bolts
*loose caliper cage bolts/splines ( the ones which the caliper slides on)

did they locktite them/ set the torque right???

is it getting worse???

Was going to take the wheel off and have a look today, but lucky ol' me has had a front spring snap on my way home last night.

The noise is still there

re: Wierd click/clunk on rear wheel [anti-rattle clips?]

Well had the wheel off and it appears the inner brake pad is loose, and casuing the rattle and click.

Spoke to fiat and it could be either the metal spring clip which is 6.50 or the clips off the brake pad, which means new pads again, after paying 40 3 months to get them changed (pads and fitting)

I will need to take the other wheel off to see what it should look like, and which clip is missing.

Will also get some photos up to

re: Wierd click/clunk on rear wheel [anti-rattle clips?]

this is doing it on both sides now, so I cant tell which clip is missing

anyone got an exploded diagram of the rear brake calliper or photo graphs and close ups of the pads in the calliper?

thanks

BBS, that sounds crazy to me

If you've paid to have rear pads fitted and someone didn't fit the spring clips back properly (maybe put them on back to front ) then that's their problem - not yours.

I'd take it back and tell them to sort it

re: Wierd click/clunk on rear wheel [anti-rattle clips?]

There's no clips on the pads themselves. The anti-rattle clips come supplied with the pads in separate bags (as a kit) and merely push into the caliper-carrier assembly.

It should be clear if any of the clips are missing as they overhang the carrier and have a 'tag' on the outer edge to provide a guide when fitting the pads.

I never realized OEM pads are supplied with new anti-rattle clips.

re: Wierd click/clunk on rear wheel [anti-rattle clips?]

sounds like this is what is missing from mine then. Is it new pads time again or can i get some seperately or does anyone have any spare knocking about from their rear change?

No point going back to the garage, it was done as a favour and I supplied the part.
