1.76 Ltr. from empty.

There's a combined filler and level plug on the side of the gearbox, so if you fill it with the car on it's wheels and on level ground, oil will overflow out of the filler hole when it has the correct amount.

You can download a Stilo handbook from the forum downloads section if you don't have one.

Can't find any recomendations for the gearbox on the Castrol site. :(

Edit.
Found it.
Castrol recommends..

Castrol TAF-X
A fully synthetic SAE 75W-90 multi-grade transaxle oil. Designed to help improve cold weather gear selection and keep transmission noise levels to a minimum at high operating temperatures.
Recommended where an API GL4 lubricant is specified.

Soz, i meant fully synthetic car engine oil.

Then the answer is NO, engine oil should not be used in a gearbox.

Most noticeable is the difference in viscosity, gearbox oil being the thicker of the two.

Use the wrong oil and you'll have problems.

Castrol Edge(engine oil) and Castrol TAF-X(gearbox oil) are brilliant fully synthetic oils but they are specific in their uses and are not interchangeable.

Ok guys.....

You may perceive me as foolish at times when viewing my posts but I was not out of nowhere asking a random stupid question, I did retrieve this so called hypothetical information from an internet source which I with most interest and excitement as always wanted to get other peoples point of views, opinions, knowledge, advice... and so forth on the subject in question.

- The gearbox is a very robust item, that suffers untold abuse from many drivers.
- Only use engine oil in the gearbox. Heavy EP80 or EP90 will overwork the syncromesh, wearing it out.
- Putting in thicker oil will accelerate the wear you are trying to hide. Use STP instead, (engine, not gearbox)

- Forster R., Hackett D., Plumstead M.(1997) Gearbox. Available at: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/farina/garage/gearbox.html (Accessed 14/05/2011).

So by all means if I am wrong than so be it, its all about learning for me and my apologies if I have ever offended anyone.

The advice given on the link you provided refers to the MG Farina Magnette.

Whilst using engine oil in an old Farina Magnette gearbox might be an acceptable thing to do I wouldn't advise you to do it in a modern vehicle like a Stilo.

Internet research states that engine oil can only be used as a temporary supplement if anything and not as along term solution within modern transmission units. Some web sources state that some manual transmissions still use engine oil as transmission fluid.

As the point has already been made older cars are recommended to use lower viscosity oils as the thicker and more modern transmissions fluids are heavier and over work the older transmission units.

Within Honda Forums there are some owners of late 90`s Honda Integras and Honda Preludes who use 10w40 engine oil and these are apparently recommended in the car manuals by the manufacturer.

Just some different points of view to this crazed question........
