hi, rite ive had my stilo for a few months now. been quite happy with my purchase, just small problems like stiff brakes and the airbag failure which i eventually sorted bt about hlf an hr ago fiats reputation seems 2 hav caught up on me :(
rite first thing first, my car is a 2003 Stilo 16V 3 door. havent made any major modification and havent touched the engine bay at all apart from replacing a dead battery a few months ago
but i was coming home from uni there on the motorway, done about 15 mile and was goin approx 70/80 mph when all of a sudden the engine fault light came on and the warning on the screen said "Engine Fault" the light is steady on, isnt flashing or anything.
i lost total power and was driving like those people i hate to be behind, lol. bt ive next to no power coming out of the car, i came home and ran a diagnostic on it and got these fault codes:
P0571 : Brake Switch A Circut Malfunction - ive had this for a while now and i thot it mite have something to do with the brakes being stiff at times, bt i adjusted my driving to suit the not so reliant brakes and have continued driving
P0220 : TPS/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circut Malfunction - now this is new, dont know wat it is, or how to go about fixing it. i havent erased the codes yet
P1221 : i have no idea what this one is as the diag kit i have is basic and only has the codes going up to P0999 so if anyone could shed some light on what this means? im wondering if i fone up fiat would they tell me
any help will be greatly apreciated. i miss my reliable stilo

Edit: rite well i had a quick search on the net as to what this P1221 code means and it is "Fuel pump second circuit low" if that helps anyone, thanks

I cant remember the codes involved but I recall something to do with the brake light switch for this? The Stilo Massive will queue up to help tho!

Hmm well here's my two pennies.
I just couldn't drive around with unreliable, inconsistent brakes so I'd have to get that sorted. Can't help you directly with that as they'd need a good check over

P0571 : Brake Switch A Circut Malfunction
As you've had this for while then maybe put in a new brake switch as they are a known trouble spot, only £10 from Fiat and not to difficult to fit, details in Stilo Guides

P0220 : TPS/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circut Malfunction
TPS = throttle position sensor and so as you're losing throttle response then I'd check the throttle potentiometer connectors at the gas pedal and at the throttle connector (inlet control valve) itself

P1221 :
Now i have this as "Traction Control System Malfunction" which may be related to the above two items

There's a lot of cars now that just can't compute having the brake and gas on at the same time (goodbye heeling and toeing) so you can get all sorts of weird stuff happening with a brake switch malfunction

cheers decks, i tried some of the simple procedures like disconnecting the battery for an hour then reconnecting, and deleting all the fault codes
now for some reason this seems 2 solved the problem. the car drives fine and the power seems similar to what it was before but for some reason i still feel uneasy. im gona try it out at 80, posibly 90, lol tomorrow to see if it is a problem with high speed, ive had it at 110 loads of times like and never had a spot of bother. best news would be that this is a one off but im going to see how it behaves over the next few days
wasnt a great day for me and my stilo. engine fault, loosing all power, then when i got home, as i went to open my bonnet i noticed a bit dent in it  i hate when others have no respect for my car, causin damage then just walking away. it is purely cosmetic bt i die a little inside each time i see it

btw ive been on this forum for a while now and looking through the posts i noticed that your generally there to help everyone, a fountain of knowledge as such, lol. bt you have no thanks to your name. wel you do now =D lol. cheers

To continue with Deck's two pennies:

P0571: Infamous. Get a new brake light switch fitted, only about £10.
P0220: Had this on my 1.6 I think, ended up needing a new throttle and throttle body. I'd be surprised if it was still this however, seeing as affected Stilos would have been sorted by now. As decks says, just clean the connectors to the throttle body and throttle pedal.
P1221: This will be generated by P0571, as the ASR system (brake node) will have deteced a fault with the switch, so would not have been able to operate correctly.

Doesn't sound too bad :).

well this has happened again this afternoon , so im going to be a bit more productive and sort it :chin:
not similar symptoms tho, drivin possibly onli 20 mph, not heavy on the right foot at all, car just kinda died, lost all power, was extremely slow acceleration even in 1st, i continued to my destination and did a diag (i now carry this in the car lol) exact same three codes, erased them and everything was fine, drove perfect
so the brake switch, £10 at dealership? ive seen a guide somewhere so il give it a go cz im sick of people flashin me and realisin the brake light is on
also, the throttle position sensor, is it just behind the pedal near the sound insulation? you said connectors? wat shud i b looking for?
and the inlet control valve, thats in the guide so il hav a go at that wen i get back to my tools

rite so far ive cleaned the inlet control valve (my god tht clip holdin the hose in place was a pure nightmare on the 1.2) bt got it all back together now, i tried 2 sort the brake problem, got the connector out, tested out and tried the resetting method but to no prevail so i figured that if it has to be depressed when brakes are not in use, i added some padding on the pedal below the sensor so the brakes take more than 1mm to come on so thats sorted for the minute. i have one question though:
decks mentioned something about the throttle petentiometer connectors, wat are these and what have i to do with them to ensure they work? lol.
cheers for all the help :)

As almost everything relates to your brake switch then you just need to fix this properly - but not with sticky tape- just use some long nosed pliers and pull out the switch centre plunger, it's on a ratchet, then just let the foot brake up without pulling it up and it will set itself to the correct position

rite im only after doing this there now, main reason being that i keep gettin a common fault, typical beep beep beep then "bulb failure" "< stop lamp" so ive chekd this, now this fault is coming up more often and often, each time i double chek it. but al three bulbs are working fine. i wasnt sure about this whole rachet system for the switch so i gave it a good tug and out it came sure enough, switch works grand without the padding on the pedal, im just wondering why i keep gettin this problem of bulb failure when its fine. possibly once it was out wen i chekd bt it was for a split second and wen i took my foot off and back on, all 3 wer fine. is there any way to sort this?
