Hi

I've got a few wierd things happening on my Stilo:

1. At about 80mph, when I apply maximum throttle, the car begins to vibrate (you can feel it in the steering wheel), but if I let the throttle go, it calms down.

2. Clutch - the biting point is VERY high up (almost at the end of the pedal travel) and is worse on hill starts; it feels and sounds like it's slipping (it's not my crap driving skills, I've had a few other people confirm this).

Any ideas?? My lovely FIAT dealer has managed to get FIAT UK to agree to replace the subframe - praise them!

vibration could be due to your wheels not being correctly balanced or tracking out. A high biting point is normally a sign of a worn clutch , the plates are thinner so have to travel further to make contact, But i thought new clutches had an auto adjust so they didnt do this..

I have the same two probs. I got my fronts balanced at Halfords. Didn't change things. Got the rears blanced, still didn't change things. Got the done again, just to make sure at Kwik Fit, and the wobble is still there under acceleration.

Thought I had better get Fist to look at it. Managed to get it to happen with the service manager in the casr. He thinks it MAY be drive shafts. It is booked in Tuesday for them to take a look.

As for the clutch. Mine always feels as though it is about to stall !. Difficult to describe, but things just are not quite right with the clutch and engine revs.

Of course Kwik Fit are renounded for not knowing what the hell they are doing! Get a couple of tyres there and it takes them 3 attempts to get the balance right usually!

Firstly as a halfords employee, thanks for your custom:p.

When you say driveshafts, it's funny you should mention that - i've had the same suggested to me.

I find the biting the point on the Stilo very high compared to other cars I've had as it is and even my last Brava. On hill starts I need to give it some revs to make sure I don't stall it. Has yours just started doing this or has it always been there?

Make sure you get it in before the 2 year manufacturer warranty expires. I've already found to my cost ££ that the 3rd year dealer cover is completely worthless. The exclusion list is as long as your arm.

If you need your wheels balancing the best place I found is ATS, especially the one in Accrington, Lancashire, and you can take it back for free if it happens again, it only cost me about £17+VAT.

The vibration of the steering wheel problem is a famous one apparently, so Fiat told me, it happened to my Stilo and it was the aircon pipe fouling something, I'll have a look at the sheet when I get home later and let you know, but it was covered under warranty and the problem disappeared.

Hi Tashy

Thanks, i'll await your reply. I've got to get the RHS under-car protection plastic trim replaced as it is broken, and the LHS one needs fixing on correctly - that's taking my lovely lady friend up her stupid back lane late at night and not seeing that f*****g raised manhole!!!

I finally found the big pile of work sheets from all the jobs my Stilo had done!

The vibration of the steering wheel was due to: front wheels out of balance (for the 100th time), brake pipe fouling aircon pipe, repositioned. Aircon pipe fouling o/s/f chassis leg, also repositioned. After that the vibration never came back, but the wheels were constantly unbalanced, so I went to ATS and they sorted it and after that it drove very smoothly and I was pleased with it. But then I decided to get rid of it because so many more problems occurred! Hope that helps.

Hi Tashy

Thanks for that! I am going up to my dealer tomorrow and shall mention what your dealer did in the hope that this can be resolved!

Hello Rroope,

Did you ever find out what caused your vibration problem. My car has just started doing the same thing - vibration through the steering wheel @ 80mph but only when accelerating. If I back off, it disappears. I do not think it's a wheel balancing problem as I would have vibration at a steady speed - it only happens during acceleration.

Re: Vibration when Accelerating & Strange Clutch

Yep, well sort of.

We had the two front tyres replaced, balanced and then a 4-wheel tracking alignment done. All disappeared!!!

Tyres were wearing on the inside edge so we had that corrected beforehand, hence leading to the above being required. My 03 Stilo doesn't do it and the 02 one doesn't anymore, and both are wearing the tyres down equally.

Re: Vibration when Accelerating & Strange Clutch

Hello JW,

I've posted an earlier message about a vibration/ tremoring when accelerating above 80mph. Rroope's (thank you for replying) last post says wheel balancing and alignment cured his problem - how did you get on with yours?

I just can't help feeling its more than wheel balancing as I've no vibration/ tremoring through the steering wheel at virtually any constant speed. Again, its only during acceleration.

On a different note, I normally don't subscribe to Forums etc, but I have to say that the Fiat forum is really good ! There is a mine of useful information on it and the posts are usually pretty good. My only disappointment is that I seem to be the oldest member.....!

Re: Vibration when Accelerating & Strange Clutch

Maybery, had this problem on my Brava too, that turned out to be worn driveshafts. I'd try the tyre and wheel alignment (make sure you ask for laser 4 wheel), then go further on if that doesnt yield anything!
