Afew things :D Do you or know of anyone that tows with a stilo and how do they find it?

The plan is to put a tow bar on my stilo so i can tow my horse about. Ive done my sums and it should be able to tow it with ease. But just want some feed back , any help would be great thanks.

Does anyone know where i can get my hands on a decent priced one or know of any second hand ones up for sale? Needs to be up to towing a horse trailer so no light duty ones. (y)

You sure? What engine Stilo do you have?

Horses are rather heavy creatures. Add in the trailer and you'll be up near your maximum permissable tow weight.

I have a 1.9 JTD. Ive done my sums and i should be fine my horse only weights 465kg and the trailer is oly 500kg to 600kg, getting it weighed soon so i know the exact weight. Its only a light weight horse box.

I have known some one that towed horses with a 1.6 old almarea (sp) Now that is just mad, a big no no! and needless to say it f***ed the car eventually.

Get youself a citroen C5 HDI - One of the best Tow cars. (I hate to admit it!)

One of the most dangerous things i have ever seen was when i was stuck behind a car towing a caravan on the way from Scarborough to Whitby. This is a very hilly road where anything towing is going to struggle.

When i did eventually get past the caravan, to my horror i discovered that it was only a little Clio pulling it (x-reg), how dangorous is that. It must have been either a 1.2, 1.4, or 1.6. But whichever engine it was sure struggling and was nearly flat on its arse.

I love that video!

I went and watched it after I had seen this thread LOL :)

That is scary lol. wonder what the people driving must have been thinking when it started rolling backwards  .

It just proves that towing caravans (or anything really) requires the right car and a lot of concentration.

good evening, i use a 3door 115bhp jtd to tow 1250kgs with a braked trailer. i towed with that weight on 2 seperate occasions for 300 miles. one on the motorway, one on the a roads through mid wales. make sure it is the 115bhp youve got though. its a hellofa towcar. mines done 82k now, on original clutch towing and everything thrown in, they have alot of torque. my springs and shocks on the rear are going soft, but im a dealer tech so that doesnt really matter, but they tow well. i regulary tow a twin axle box trailer. heres a quick piccy of what i towed at 1250kgs. permitted weight is 1300kgs.

Wow, that sounds awesome (y) , I have the JTD 115 engine in mine and it is excellent.

I suppose that diesels are always better for towing then petrols due to the fact they have more pulling power.

What does the equivently sized petrol car have to the Stilo JTD 115, either the 1.6 with about 105 lb-ft or the 1.8 with 130 lb-ft

Cheers thats great help. Yeh it's the 115bhp. I'll be towing around the max of 1100kg so should have no problems then. Im used to towing, used to tow my horse trailer with the OH's dad's fontera (sp) but the engine blow up (not with the trailer on). Just wanted to hear from someone that has towed with the stilo to put my mind at rest. Thank you. (y)

Reassuring post JTDSTILO (y)

Mrs WNWL dragging me to Caravan & Motorhome Show @ NEC weekend after next as we are gonna accessorize our tow ball with a caravan sometime soon :D

Complete novice at caravaning but sure JTD will be much better tow car than my astmatic 1.6 would have been!

Um... since a JTD has about 220lb-ft then none of the petrols are close :D

ive also towed a 22ft caravan with it, and again, did it with ease. like i say though, the rear springs and shocks go soft after a while. other than that your in good shape, ive not even had a smelling clutch yet, but when it goes itl just be changed. arse end is a little bouncy with weight on it, but nothing serious. infact, the stilo handles better towing than it does not towing!!

Shouldn't be putting too much nose weight on it though. Usually about 60-70Kg max.
