Technical Aircon - broken pipe

Had the car back off the dealer after a speedy job....aircon and fan now works a treat, shame the weathers turned again !!

Mine is still not fixed. Went in over a week ago for the part to fitted. The job wasn't completed as they found another part was fu**ed. Went in on Friday only to be told that the part had not arrived. I'm going to tackle Fiat as it's now been a month without A/C. I traded my Seicento Schumacher for this (fool) as my new job entails 80 odd miles on the M'ways so I needed the aircon. This car is not fit for purpose yet I have to cough up every month to Fiat finance!

Just another update (for anyone who's interested). Took my car in Saturday and guess what, still not fixed. They said it shouldn't have been booked in as they only work 5 hours on a Sat!

I've been given an Alfa 147 JTD 115 as a loan car until mine's sorted. The Stilo is better built (really)but the Alfa steers & handles miles better. As for the Diesel v Petrol debate, there's no comparison. Diesels are for trucks & Taxi's...not Italian cars!!

I usually change my aircon filter 2 times a year ... cause it gets filthy all the time it costs around 10e over here.

I'm interested to read how many people have had their bust aircon pipes fixed under the third years warranty! My aircon broke a few weeks back but the dealer said they wanted £80 to test for a broken pipe as it wasn't covered under the third years warranty. Naturally I told them to stuff it and walked out.

Does anyone know if I have a case to go back and kick up a stink!

I should probaby have read this post before posting on the general forum about the exact same problem so apologies for any who's seen it!

I checked fuse 19 tonight after Mt aircon died and it was fine I can only assume a burst pipe but like jdcotr I'm a bit worried about a bill as seemingly pipes and rubber hoses aren't covered in the 3rd year see here http://fiat.co.uk/services/3_year_dealer_warranty.asp for details of the miserly 3rd year warranty.

Scorq I'll be using Arnold Clark in Glasgow (for my sins) who did you use or who did anyone else for that matter?

Cheers

i only got my stillo on monday, 2.4 sports, got it while my marea weekend is having some work done, & already the air con isn't working, went 2 Llandudno 2day, 92 miles, the car was fine going there but then i got back in the car & started it up it said engine fault, then car started shaking so i turned the engine off. went 4 another look round da shops & went bck 2 car half an hour later, started da car up, it said the check was ok, i decided 2 have a look at the engine before i set off, i turned the climate control on & i notised a pool of water appearing under the car, so i turned the climate control off & it stopped leaking. I took the car for a ride round 2 see if it was ok, seemed fine apart from a light coming on which it the was the air commpreser. so any way i got back on the moterway & headed for home, the car was up 2 150mph without even pushing the engine, anybody got any ideas, could the air con & the shaking be linked?, no more shaking yet

1) Pools of water under a car with aircon is perfectly normal - it comes off
the evaporator.

2) No way in hell was your Stilo doing 150MPH. Not a chance in hell.

The only way it would do, would involve pushing it out of a plane and reaching terminal velocity on its descent.

Thats what u think... :D

Got the bad news on my Aircon today. Burst pipe and as it's into the third year of the warranty it's not covered. The damage is £218 for the pipe and the re-gas. I'm absolutely sick.

I've phoned Fiat and asked for a contribtion from them but I'm not holding my breath :(

No, it's what I know.

You made the statement,

"the car was up 2 150mph without even pushing the engine"

I suggest you do some basic maths and work out what RPM your engine would be doing in 5th gear, if you were at an actual 150MPH....

Firstly it just isn't going to happen in a 2.4l Stilo and secondly, even if it were possible, your engine would be revving its proverbial nuts off just before it self-destructed.

Why dont the people who have water leaks etc use the search option on this site and then if your concern is not answered then ask the question. It will save time for the people who are trying to answer all the queries having to read through each one and then repeat the same thing......Sorry i`ve had a pants day answering the same things...........And YES the 2.4sillyspeed WILL do over 150mph..........By dropping it from a great height......or were you reading the KPH?????????????????????

Air con pipe

I'm out of warranty now so feeling very much on my own but I have the famed air con pipe crack. (Crack? The pipe had sheared right off!). Anyway the part is £35 and is a doddle to fit and a mobile air con leak check and recharge is £55 so someone is swinging the lead at Fiat Dealers claiming nearly £200 to repair

I don't think it would be difficult to actually repair the pipe using a straight connector and might even be a better job as a replacement pipe, unless it's been modified, will also tend to shear off in the same place given time

Re: Air con pipe

The pipe is held on by just one 10mm bolt at the compressor end and is sealed with an o ring. The other end is just knuckle scrapingly near the front bumper. I'll take some piccys.

There's going to be a "How to guide?" What a jolly decent idea!

Re: Air con pipe

Dont forget you also have to change the filter drier, otherwise the system will never work properly. That is probably what the dealer has quoted for.

Re: Air con pipe

The air con pipe fractures at the condenser end situated at front of the car.
To replace the pipe is fairly easy, takes about an hour. The new pipe has a longer flexible section as you can see in this picture so is less likely to fracture than the original . Price £28 plus VAT from Fiat

First of all dress accordingly as you’ll be on your back most of the time. This is the position you’ll need to adopt. Bring along a friend for company. :)

Remove the drivers’ side road wheel and insert an axle stand under the chassis.

Access is easier to the top connection if you remove the engine top cover (4x 10mm nuts).

Disconnect the air con pipe from the compressor (situated below the oil filler cap). Held by a 10mm bolt, it’s easier to remove if you have a wobbly joint or flexible extension

You’ll need to remove the engine plastic stoneguard from the driver’s side underneath of the car for access
air 4.JPG

The engine stone guard is held by 5x 10mm bolts. The easy one is here, another at the front under the front bumper but easy to find. Another if you look up from underneath securing the guard to the drivers side wheel arch cover. A tricky one to get at is between the drivers wheel arch cover and the guard facing inboard and the last one secures the rear of stone guard to the chassis which is easy to find. Once this is removed the stone guard just falls out. Lovely

Now you remove the air pipe to condenser connection.
air 2.JPG

This is held by a 10mm securing nut shown here. You may need to grip the union with a mole wrench in order to pull it off

INSTALLING
Place the new pipe roughly in position. Connect the bottom pipe to condenser connection first. Make sure the routing of the pipe isn’t going to rub on any moving parts. Connect the top connector to the compressor

Refit the stone guard and roadwheel

An air con recharge costs £55 for a mobile air con engineer home visit.

Head off to hotel to spend the £110 that you saved by not using Fiat

Looking forward to a hot summer!
