No space in the engine even if you do your best you wont find any room to place the air filtre to have cold air even if you place down low you always in danger of water the solution we recommend is this amazing air filtre with fibreglass in front that protects it against water and summer bugs.

Doesn't mounting the unit there block airflow to the radiator, or am I just being dumb ?

No thats a very good question pjp for the answer is you put the filtre behind the bumper close enough so it has a lot of room for both to work correctly.
