I have a Fiat Stilo Estate 1.9 diesel 2004 reg. I have two problems with it. The first being that the electric passenger window just opens by itself whilst I am driving. There is no pattern it just opens.

The second problem seems more serious. When driving along the car loses power it doesnt cut out it just slows down and wont accelerate. To get it to accelerate I have to change gear. So I could be doing 60/70 in fifth and have to go down to fourth then it will do it again and its back to fifth down to fourth. It was very intermittent but the other day whilst driving my family on the ring road around Amsterdam I was constantly having to change gear to keep the car going. I haven't driven it since because I don't trust it, and I dont speak Dutch and dont know any garages or mechanics here! I am guessing it will need to go to a garage but hope to get some idea of what I might be dealing with.

Second problem sounds familiar - could be a faulty overboost valve...

Are you getting a sudden drop off of power - for seemingly no reason and no warning lights/beeps from the display

You should be OK, every Dutchman I've met speaks better English than many Brits..... ;)

With your first problem of the passenger window then the passenger door node gets it's signal to descend the window either directly from the passenger door switch or from the can network (driver's door switch, key fob open windows selection etc) . To eliminate which then you could try disconnecting the passenger door switch completely and test if it happens again. You can still operate the window from the driver's side.
If it doesn't do it again then you know where the problem is

As the passenger window switch is rarely used it could just be poor contacts on the switch.

If you still have a ghost operation of the window with the switch out of the circuit then I'd check the cabling connector at the edge of the door

Thanks for that. You are right most Dutch have very good English but it does become a struggle when the language becomes technical especially if even I dont know what I am trying to say, now at least I can say it may be a faulty overboost valve and he will at least know what the symptoms are. Do you know if it is a costly fault to fix?

Thanks for reply. 'Reckon its too complicated for me to fiddle with. It probably can wait until I get back to UK just need to hope it dont keep opening when it is raining.

Mine was done under warranty - after a wee bit of jumping up and down - but that was a Fiat reposition modification to stop the thing getting wet  You need to see if that's been done.

Look down the side of the battery tray on the engine side. If you see a small device strapped there above the airbox with 'plumbing' going in and out supported by cable ties or something like that then it's been done, but that doesn't mean the pipework isn't 'off' somewhere or damaged.
I think the simplist thing would be to pay for an engine diagnostic and go from there

Thats great I will get it checked. I drove it today and it was absolutely fine, but I will check out the stuff you suggest. Thanks again

I havent had it checked because I didn't think there was much point unless it was actually doing it. However, it has started again and I notice that I don't need to change gear, just ease off the accelerator and straight back on and its fine till the next time. I am hoping that it will keep going until I get back to the UK. Do you know if it is something that is likely to get worse?
